Again the sole purpose of the CCG is marine SAR, if you take a vessel off of that role and be tasked to something like security then you no longer have that vessel for a search tasking when needed and no back up. Believe you me that the CG operates with minimum vessels. The ships do hydrographical and ice breaking work but would be useless for interdiction purposes. If the resources were available for security purposes then they would be better utilized by the specifically trained RCMP units. Yes there may be times that we need to carry police on board but really how is his 9mm of any use when our vessel is bouncing around like a cork on the ocean and how is he going to offer protection for my crew? ye I work with a volunteer unit and we do on occasion work with the police. If we to go get a stranded vessel then better us than the police. We are better trained in these situations and we don't, won't and can't fine someone if they don't have PFD's, we carry spares for that. The police would just fine them for that(then fuck up the tow back). The public trust us and have confidence in us for this very reason, add security to our task and they will not trust us. As for the CCG you may find some ex-navy, more likely ex-fishermen but they are all civil servants in a gravy job. Excellent at what they do but gun toting soldiers they are not.

ShepherdsDog ShepherdsDog:
Game Wardens(DNR) are armed to combat poachers, so why not armed DFO officers to handle smugglers and people fishing illegally?

I remember a couple of armed fishery vessels that tied up in Halifax when I was in the Navy. One of them was called the Chebucto. They were Fisheries, though, not Coast Guard ( DOT, at the time).

When I talk about arming the coast guard vessels, I mean a 40mm bofors on the bow of larger vessels and at least 1 .50 cal on each side of the boat.

We need this, especially since there was a Coast Guard location closed recently by the last PM so that he could save $700 000.00 per year.

Fine but paint the vessel grey not red & white and have it manned by RCN personnel as they're already trained in weapons usage and security. It'll be better return for our tax dollars and it would leave the CCG to do what they're trained for - saving lives.
