Never had any problems there. I found it generally friendly as it is ultimately a tourist city, and if you tried some French, you generally received a positive response.

Wouldn't want to live there though.

but on the South Shore? Forget it.

"... Beautiful Downtown Boucherville" as an old DJ (Ralph Lockwood) used to refer to it ...

I was a real shock when I spent a few days on St. Pierre, Michelon way back in the 70s. I grew up in Quebec, in the Protestant school system learning my (Parisian) French from Algerians and Sephardic Jews and not every quite understanding everything around me. Suddenly, on St. Pierre, where everyone spoke the French that I had learned, it was as if they'd opened up the curtains an let the sunlight in. I could carry on a coherent conversation without reverting to Fringlish! Magic! Gotta go to Paris, some day.

No kidding! Parisian French is what we (Protestants) were taught in Quebec for a couple of generations.

Perverse, eh?

Grew up in the West Island ... lived "In town" for a decade ... attended university, there. I left (towards Ottawa) in the middle of a deep recession(with inflation going bananas) because there were no opportunities for either young Anglos or young any-body-else's there, at the time. I was the last one of my family to leave and pretty near the last of my classmates. My classmates parents mostly stayed as they were trapped there by their real estate (and life IS pretty good, there, if you don't have to earn a living) I have lived there for a bit, since.

(p.s. I left following a woman to Ottawa! ... no, I wasn't stalking her, ya dirty bugger.)

About 400,000 people just like me left Quebec between 1976 and about 2000. That's pretty bonkers, considering how well educated and ambitious a lot of us were/are.

I went to High School with an astronaut and the ex-mayor of a major city (now a provincial cabinet minister) ... as well as a veritable mountain of PhDs.

No, I like 20year old girls.

The problem with that is that I'm 57!
