If there are any CKAers who have power out east and know anyone thinking of heating their home by burning something - campstove, BBQ etc. - DO NOT. Discourage anyone you know from doing this.

Burning anything produces Carbon Monoxide, and it will kill them. A little Hibachi is more than enough to kill everyone in a 2 story home if there is no fresh air circulating.

Candles actually produce quite a bit of heat, and a few of them don't produce enough CO to kill you. Or, heat water in big pots on the BBQ outside, and bring the pots inside.

It's events like that, and the expected 9.1 out here, that make me happy I have a fireplace.

And, after that 9.1 your fireplace is still going to be standing? ROTFL

Not to Godwin this thread but, what the hell did you build it out of Fuhrer Bunker Concrete. 8O

More likely than not. Our area has the lowest potential damage rating as long as we survive the tsunami.

You'd think after the 1998 ice storm that the freaking utilities would be underground by now.

Out here in Redneck Alberta, we did that in the 1970's. They did in Montreal too. Some places still have above ground power, but they were built in the 1950s and 60s.

My power went out here (Thornhill) at 9:30pm Saturday night, and came back on at 11:30pm Sunday night. I lit some candles and sat under my blanket with a fully charged iPod. That and a few extra naps. Wasn't much else to do.

It's a mixture around here of buried and not. We are in an older neighbourhood built right after WWII and most but not all of the utilities are buried (gas, telephone, cable are all buried but not Hydro. Anything built after about 1970 is all underground.

The '98 Ice Storm happened 300 miles to the East in another geographic area, farther North. There are a lot of good reasons to bury all of your utilities, everywhere, but a smallish ice storm every half century (which is what it's like in the Toronto area) isn't enough of a reason on its own.

New York City experienced a debilitating and unmatched blizzard in 1888 and they required that all utilities be underground after that event. They've never had such a blizzard since but the wisdom of the decision paid off during Tropical Storm Sandy in 2012 when high winds didn't knock down wires all across the city - for the simple fact that they were all underground.

That is mostly the case here, too. The Toronto area is quite huge sprawling (about like L.A. and not much smaller, either.) It has been developed in waves and bands. I would say that the majority of the utilities are buried here, now but obviously it is a work in progress. I've lived in Oakville to the West for thirty years now (from Quebec where ice storms like this one are a regular occurance) and this is only the second one that I remember here in three decades and the first one was nothing.I'm sure that this event may speed up the process of burying everything but as I said, it is a huge sprawling place. This connurbation arond here contains 1/5 of the population of Canada and it is a big project.

The best justification for burying would be all the grossly overpaid, overpensioned unionized hydro workers that would be cut off the public payroll, but the unions would go bananas if we ever went down that road.

Amen. You have to be someone's cousin to get a job with Oakville Hydro.
