The last traffic jam here was 100% explainable. There's a 3 way stop at the main intersection. You go thru if you're coming to town, use the exit to leave town and stop travelling across town.
Nobody knows how a 4 way stop (or 3 way) works. So they all stop and wait for the other guys to go first. Who can't because they're also waiting for others to go, so by then three logging trucks are incoming and no one can go. Because it's a tight turn and they slow down, six more cars are backed up and the exit out of town is blocked. Then the drivers from the mill 1/2 mile further away arrive in "rush minutes" and someone stops at the Liquor Store which is only a couple car lengths back from the aforementioned exit.
Eventually the incoming trucks stop but it takes twenty more minutes as those backed up cars hit the 3 way stop and one by one wait for someone else to make the first move.
Having been a courier driver in Vancouver in my misspent youth, I tend to sneak down the alleys and through parking lots at a breakneck 40-50kmh and cross the road like a maniac with less than 30 seconds between the oncoming cars.
That leaves time to stand outside and have a smoke and watch the Rush 1/4hour end.
I was going to buy a spot in the local paper offering a $20 reward for a photograph of the sign that says the speed limit through town is 20 kmh, but after a few years here it dawned on me that if you drove 50 kmh it's likely you'd have already driven right though it without noticing a town was there....
