Will the $100,000 to Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue, a new inshore rescue boat station, and a new hovercraft be enough to make up for the loss of the other?

CanadianODST CanadianODST: Gunnair Gunnair: Xort Xort: Cost reductions are always made to things that people think have value otherwise they would have been removed long ago for being wastes of money.
If they think it's such a huge deal, set up a charity and raise the funds to operate the base. It appears there is no subject that you are clueless about that you won't chime in on. That's right, no one talks shit about Gunny's Navy! ![Drink up [B-o]](./images/smilies/drinkup.gif) Coast guard, friend, coast guard.

martin14 martin14: So watch the reality: $1: Among the crowd were B.C. NDP leader Adrian Dix, New Democrat MP Fin Donnelly, Liberal MP Joyce Murray, and local politicians such as Vancouver city councillor Kerry Jang
So, dipper, dipper, lib, and Jang tried to be a dipper. Richmond: 2 federal ridings both won by CPC. They get the money. Have a think about that the next time your in the booth. Lefties always support closing military bases in someone else's neighborhood. In their own neighborhood they mistake the military for a jobs program. We had the same thing in California after the Cold War ended. Every base in the San Francisco Bay Area closed save for Travis AFB. Billions in payroll were lost and then hundreds of millions in local tax revenues were lost. The bankruptcy of the City of Vallejo is a direct consequence of the closure of the Mare Island Naval Shipyard which had keep the local economy going for over a century. Alameda Naval Air Station closed and dropped an economic turd on the East Bay, Hamilton Field closed and San Rafael took it in the shorts. In Sacramento we lost Mather AFB and McClellan AFB and the region has been iffy ever since. In every case local anti-military politicians protested trying to save their bases and they lost for the simple reason that the Pentagon wanted to move jobs to pro-military states like Washington, Texas, Utah, Idaho, and etc. The post Cold War realignment was payback time for every state with an anti-military Congressional delegation and I supported the realignment 100%. If the states in question hated the military so much then they should STFU when their bases got closed. Ditto for Vancouver. Let the Coasties move to some place that values their work and not just their payroll.

bootlegga bootlegga: Yeah, this is more about saving people's lives than the few bucks the Coast Guard members will spend. People are worried the other station is too far away for timely rescues, and I'd say rightly. Worried, but not enough to open their wallets and do something about it. Everyday governments make choices that will risk lives to save money. This is just another example of making that choice. As I said, if the people are so worried about it, raise the money themself. It's not uncommon for medical services or search and rescue operators to be partly funded by public donations.

What a dumb idea... SAR should be funded by the government, not non-profits or corporations.

What do you think about something like the STARS Air Ambulance and it's funding model?

The CPC closed the station. Lefties are trying to keep it open. First Xort now you.

Some don't realize that the Coast Guard is DFO, not DND
