SprCForr SprCForr: Company BS vs freedom to choose.
I was talking to a pal the other day. He bought a '47 Ford pickup. Very nice truck. IIRC it's vehicle number 6 or something. He called to have insurance put on it and the rep told him he had too many and they wouldn't insure it.
Bill asked for clarification from the Head Office and the rep said not necessary because he had too many. He said thank you, hung up the phone and called their competition. They welcomed him with open arms and gave him a pretty sweet deal. I've heard alot of excuses as to why an insurance company can't/won't do something. Saying you own too many cars already, that's a new one.

andyt andyt: So, you guys going to insist that your particular cases are the "truth" or acknowledge that this study is probably closer to it? I pay much less for mulitple vehicles here in AB than I ever did for one in BC. Or a different way: The amount of money to insure that one vehicle 15 years ago in BC is 2/3 of what I pay now for insuring 4 here in AB.

Saying you own too many cars already, that's a new one. That floored me too. Bill is pretty laid back but damn was he pissed when he was told that. I pretty sure he's going to have a word with the office manager about it.

Did you move from an urban to rural area? Did your driving record improve? Who knows what the reason is, but in a discussion about rates, I'll take the study over your one particular case any day.

My case is truth. Note the lack of qualifiers around the word truth.
All the variables you mention are no factor what so ever in my case. My driving record is bullet proof.

I'm saying that your case doesn't generalize to others, and it would be interesting to see if all the factors really remained the same when you moved from BC to Alta. But whatever, to say that ICBC has higher rates in general, because you paid higher rates doesn't have much validity according to this study. For instance Calgary has higher rates than Vancouver.

Gotta agree with Andy here, I bought my mustang and insured it in Burnaby, was paying $180/mo full coverage cuz it was financed. Moved to Edmonton and was quoted by every company $500 - $750/mo (2001 Mustang GT). I was getting fed up and kept my BC insurance for almost a year before finally TD Meloche Monnex did me a favor and rated me as a 5 star driver and was able to lower the price to $250/mo. Still $70/mo more than ICBC. ICBC was much cheaper for me. Hands down.

$250 a month for 1 vehicle? I pay a shade over 300/month for 2 trucks(mine and the wifes), my motorbike, boat, ATV and house insurance. I'd hate to see what that would cost me with ICBC!

Depends where you live. I went from Burnaby to Edmonton, not St. Albert or Sherwood Park.

Smacle Smacle: Depends where you live. I went from Burnaby to Edmonton, not St. Albert or Sherwood Park. It also depends on how much you drive (high mileage costs more than low mileage) and why you drive (driving for work costs more).

I can't imagine an insurance company refusing business...unless it was run by government, of course.

Well I'm sure he's glad for the info, he would have never thought of it on his own. Spc Forr says he pays less in Alta than BC, Smacle says he pays more. Just two individual instances, you can't generalize to insurance on average being more or less in Alberta or BC. Except the study says it's more in Alberta. So much for the inefficient govt hypothesis. ICBC is hugely profitable and periodically gets raided by the govt for its surplus.
