What I don't get, is that Translink comes to gov't and the public every bloody year with their hand out for more tax payers money. How do you earn a bonus when your company barely can afford to operate? When my company wasn't making profit, there were no raises, let alone bonuses, period. If the company is not profitable, the responsible people need to be fired!!

Soooo glad I don't live in the Lower Mainland, although I'm sure everyone else in the province will eventually pay for Translink.

Translink can never make a profit. That's an unreasonable expectation. Anymore than BC ferries could. They are responsible for major roads and transit - no profit in there anywhere unless they were to go for true road pricing for drivers and true transit costs.

I just dont think any one person is that valuable and irreplaceable.

..its too easy for execs to blow smoke up the ass of the shareholders and say they did the best they could given circumstances beyond their control.

I second both points.

Some say, those guys would make more money in the private sector. OK, let them go there. There should be no problem finding a replacement, to work for $100k or less.

Ye of little corporate experience...

Sure you can find someone to fill the role for less money but at what expense to the organization? Bring in some 'keener' fresh outta school, pay him 60k and watch him fuck up the organization. But hey....you saved on salary and bonus!

You're not going to have experienced executives at the bottom of the barrel willing to take anything. The second they drop from one organization, they've got their feelers out already.

Well by that reasoning, we should be paying enough to get the really top guys - these guys are making peanuts compared to them. Those top guys would turn around Translink in a heartbeat and have it turning a profit in no time. Actually that was the reasoning that went into paying David Hahn 1 million a year to run the ferries, with a 300K plus pension to go with it. For some reason tho, he just drove the system further into debt. Still got his salary and pension tho.

If execs claim that they deserve big bonuses for performance, they should be willing to take big pay cuts when they don't perform.

In the Drunkards Walk, Leonard Mlodinow points out what bullshit we base executive pay on.

...Plus 2 years of salary and benefits continuance to keep them comfortably afloat while they take an extended tropical vacation before picking their next absurdly high-paying job from the executive job tree. In a worst-case scenario, they become self-employed consultants for a while and charge clients 1000 bucks an hour to "bring a fresh set of eyes" to a project.

Maybe Crispie Clark has a point about being able to find 30 mil in efficiencies in Translink. Just another out of control Frankenorganization set up by the Liberals. If BC Ferries can have big bonuses, why not Translink.

And funny how bonuses never help improve worker performance, just the execs.

Isn't this the organization that you supported instituting another carbon tax for recently?

current-events-f59/mayors-consider-new-metro-vancouver-carbon-tax-t100246.html

Yep...sounds like there's a big chunk of their shortfall. As Zip said, start by getting rid of the board.

Translink needs a revenue source besides property taxes, I support that. It's possible to support that and that the organization be run efficiently, those are not contradictory goals. No matter what, we have a great need for improved transit here, otherwise we'll never get people out of their cars. That means more air pollution and costs even more for roads than transit costs. So we've gotta pay. We don't gotta pay bullshit salaries and bonuses.

I think these are the clowns that wanted a few years ago wanted a bonus for showing up to meetings. I don't see the need for this board. We've got enough levels of government--four in Vancouver--without adding yet another. They should be converted to biofuel.

Jealousy will get you nowhere.

The quicker you realize that and work towards your own goals and stop worrying about others, you'll be in a much better place.

Hope you remember that for your next anti-Union rant.
