BartSimpson BartSimpson:
Memo to Self: Don't buy BC born babies.

:D And always read the label carefully.

bootlegga bootlegga:
I also know that we NEVER recommended any travel in the last trimester.

Esp Australia to BC. May be the only underlying point to this story

According to the report, the agent they talked to on the phone verbally assured them they were covered for the pregnancy. But it now becomes a matter of he said, she said. I'd be changing insurance providers.

Caveat Emptor......They should have spent a bit more time studying the relevant clauses involved.

I agree on that, but what stumps me is how it ever came up to 1 million ! How can a three month stay and a delivery come up to that ?

That averages to over 11,000 dollars a day ! From recent experiences in my social circle like stated earlier, this kind of stuff can be pretty costly but still that figure is way over the top.

I'd fight it in court if it was me since I think its a total rip off !

Pregnancy Insurance for a pregnant woman in her 9th month who also puts herself on a 12 or so hour flight? I wish to see the company that would offer a policy and the premium at which it will come.

Did you read the story at all? The baby was born VERY prematurely. Aside, airliners won't let you fly when you are more than 7 months pregnant.

I'm thinking that this baby was born 10 weeks+ premature.

Yes, I knew it was her 7th month, but still I do not think that makes too much of a difference. As someone pointed out, premature births are common.

It would not be too hard to rack up that kind of bill at over $8,000 per day!!

$1:
Piper Kan was born last Aug. 6, when mother Rachel Evans went into labour in her 26th week at Vancouver International Airport, shortly before the couple were scheduled to fly back to Sydney.

The baby girl weighed less than a kilogram when she was born by emergency C-section at BC Children's and Women's Hospital and spent 90 days in neonatal intensive care with breathing and lung problems, at a cost of $8,120 per day.

Piper's care also incurred the costs of numerous specialists and consultants. The couple also had to pay $550 for the ambulance from the airport to the hospital and another $3,000 for the birth.

3000k for the birth but 8k per day for use of an ic unit ! man those are some seriously inflated prices. I know healthcare doesn't come cheap but this is ridiculas !

I think price for healthcare has gotten way out of hand almost everywhere because of insurance companies and I'm not saying this just because of this paticular case. I see it all around me here aswell, it really hits home here because when I was growing up here, health care was absolutely free for everyone and now...

14 weeks premature is NOT common. 3 weeks early is common, but that is not premature. Everything earlier than that is premature. 50% of babies born before 32 weeks will not surive.

Premature is NOT common, and they are lucky this little kid survived.

What do you expect women to do? Stay in bed from the moment they are impregnated till the moment they give birth?

Another thing, you "knew she was in her 7th month" (my math says something different, but whatever) yet the first thing you yell is (paraphrase) "why the hell would you go on fucking 12 hour flight when you are in your 9th month, stupid fool. You did it yourself". Flip flop much?

In the article the parents seem pretty chill about the whole thing... Good for them! I would be furious at a million dollar hospital bill. That's just so excessive.

26 weeks pregnant? Why not? I take it that all of a sudden, when you are pregnant, you are disabled?
Then, really, do not expect pregnant women to work till the day they give birth, but send them home on maternity leave from the day they find out they are pregnant, until a year after the baby is born. How about that?
