ridenrain ridenrain: If we had less party unity and more freedom, we'd really see some democracy. A lesson none more than Harper need to learn.

ridenrain ridenrain: More underhanded than Chretien's snap election against an unprepaired Day in 2002? 2002? But yea, more underhanded than that.

Scape Scape: I can't see a coalition in the cards but stick a fork in Harper cuz he is done. His bluff got called and now there is no way this government will survive a confidence vote. And even if he does, based on these events and the eminent threat not of an election he may or may not win but of a coalition he might not be able to stop, his survival could be based more on good, moderate policy rather than bullying a weaker opponent.

As a liberal, (social liberal only), I feel a little ashamed if the party I always vote for hijacks power after legitimately losing an election. I would think the best course of action of the GG would be to throw the country back into election rather than to allow a party that just lost the election to form a coalition.
Most parliamentary democracies have legislation to prevent the loser parties from forming coalitions. Usually, a party must win, even if only by the slightest of slight fraction of a cute-hair minority to actually attempt it.
I'd be looking toward voting for a grand united left party if that is what they wish to do, or to run as a 4 way coalition party they still have my full support.
Harper brought this down on himself. He really screwed up this time. Does he not realize many Canadians don't have money to give to political parties? Democracy would become an exclusive rich man club if only those with money to donate could have representative parties.
Imagine if Obama's first order of business as president would be to draft a bill that would force all future presidential elections to be on private donations because he knows it is a major strength for him, and a weakness for his opponents. Instead of working to fix the economy, he would effectively be legislating his way into an easy 2012 win. Well the shit that Harper pulled this time, its worse.

DerbyX DerbyX: What you really mean to say is that Harper made no attempt at governing with a minority. He tried to bully the opposition and when it failed he fliped faster then he flopped.
Harper is a coward as Robair puts it. He now stands a real chance of losing to a coalition.
Harper has been saying and doing anything to grasp power and never once has he had the country at heart unlike the Liberals did from 1993 all the way up until 2006. Harper is undoubtedly one of the most dangerous ideologues to ever obtain power in Canada. His so called government's end cannot come too soon.

This was reckless and needless. They save what, $30 mil on this little stunt? Chump change and an election will be 10x that not to mention the ire will be huge if Harper goes to the polls again. The coalition would save the CPC from embarrassment in name only from something of their own design. I see no reason why Harper would moderate his behavior. He is used to an opposition that plays dead. FYI

Excuse my harping, but harper is a coward. He backs down as described when shown he absolutely cannot run a minority in the fashion he has and be effective. His sycophantic pandering and boot licking on the world scene is imho unparalleled in Canadian leadership. He is a true disgrace, I cannot believe anyone actually voted for him.

You lefties ate getting all wet thinking about a coalition.
As a conservative, I too am very excited about this upcoming coalition. I hope to God it comes to fruition. I give it 3 months tops before the seperatists (remember the party that wants to destroy Canada?) want more money and this coalition it going to fold like a cheap suit.
Then we'll see who gets the last laugh. The NDP will hold onto their votes as well most of the votes for the Bloc but the Liberals will be obliterated as all the Blue Grits will vote Conservative. Yes ALL of them.
Bye bye Liberal party. Just make sure you send back Dion to France and Iggy to America.

Why do you beleive so? When the right wing merged it was the same thing. Perhaps Canada's future lies in a two party system. Time will tell.

$1: Jack Layton in charge of Canada's economy Do you think the Liberals want to carry that baggage around for eternity? There is a small phenomenon called "political re-alignment". Things change, seats will be shed, what could start as a coalition today could become 1 united party down the road. It could be positive, because it could lead to the eventual destruction of the BQ as we know it. It could mean a more united Canada, but perhaps more politically stratified one.
