So it turns out there is a 57ha bird sanctuary just a few kilometres from town, complete with a small lake and a couple of blinds by the lake. Here's one of the birds I saw yesterday. Of course, now I need a bigger telephoto lens. I'm going to have to buy a bird book so I can learn what I'm looking at/taking pictures of. I have no idea what this is.

Well, you have a black bird a little bigger than a Robin, with a yellow head sitting on a cattail, from the looks of things, what you have there is a Yellow Headed Blackbird...... As for a bird book I would highly recommend the Golden Field Guide - Birds of North America. My copy has served me well for a number of years. Where is this bird sanctuary located?

Huh. That was way too easy. I'll look into that book the next time I'm in Penticton. The sanctuary is 6km east of Princeton. It's a great place, with the rolling hills and interpretive signs for the types of plants in the area.

If you have an IPod, there is a great field guide on it - includes pictures, ranges, and calls. I love it.

No app where you can point your Ipod at the bird, or have it listen to it's call, and it will tell what species it is?
