Satellite has dreadful latency. Horrid for playng games, expensive, slow.
Where do you live you can't get a DSL or cable?
unless it's a large community, that is what everything north of 55 N is like.

Well Thank GOd I'm only at 54 30....LOL

No WISPs in your area? Usually cheaper than sat, but it's like cable. Speed varies with load because it's shared (which eventually kills satISPs too). Less latency.

Yea if you're thinking about getting satellite don't do it unless there's no other option. I live out in the country and we have 2 options: satellite or dial-up. We have tried to use wireless but we could never get a reliable signal. For $60 a month xplornet gives us 1mbps and a 200mb an hour cap. If we use up that 200mb we get shut off, well not shut off but the internet becomes unusably slow. I'm not sure if we have a monthly cap though. The latency is too high for us to play games.

It's not all bad though. I can browse, and download music and videos reasonably fast. I just can't do too much off it or we get cut off. Still, it's better than dial-up.

Kudos to Shaw.

I just got a phone call from them. They upgraded their lite service so it's now 4 times faster. No rate increase. I didn't even ask them to. They just did it. No more pausing YouTube to cache enough to watch a video.

Thanks Shaw.

That's what you CAN get with wireless. But you aren't getting free installation, a grand worth of equipment free, a free computer and no cap for $30 a month either.

Heard that tune before. Like they give a damn where you go on the Net. Probably got the content advisor turned on....

Shouldn't really say that as an absolute truth, I know of one major ISP that blocked all of their customer's access to the union's website during a strike.

We have a 60 gig limit at our house. There are 2 computers and a PS3 running off the internet. My stepson and myself do the bulk of the downloading and the closest we came to reaching our limit was 45 gigs. I also know that most ISP's these days have a bandwidth tracker so you can see how much you've used. My suggestion is to use it and avoid any unpleasant surprises.

Everybody knows that 0.5Mb enough for a comfortable surfing. My ISP offers me now the 15Mb package, what do I need it for ? For surfing on this site ?
Interesting that they have 100Mb package too.

Well, I'm learning a valuable lesson right now. Since my previous post in this thread things have changed somewhat. Although my internet habits haven't changed over the last two years,(actually they have, I don't d/l nearly as much as I used to) so far this year, I've recieved 2 notices that I was approaching bandwidth max and 1 bill with a 22Gig overuse, which essentially doubled my cable bill. I know my next one will have an overuse charge as well because I hit 100% on the last day of the billing period. So any internet usage that day cost me extra.
Found out that when games I've been playing for years upgrade and expand, b/w use increases. Kinda pissing me off cuz as my back gets worse, the internet becomes more and more of my entertainment.
