CBC was once respected for its professionalism, but lately they seem to have had some real gaffes(placing the rape story of a CBS reporter in the arts and entertainment section  ). In the current edition they are carrying a story(a Reuters originally by the looks of things) on how sugary(sweetened by glucose, fructose and sucrose) beverages cause an increase in blood pressure that could damage the heart. Yet the picture some numb nut used to gives examples of these evil beverages doesn't seem to fit.

Wow. That's pretty bad.

Also even regular coke has "only" 160 caories per can, so you'd need to drink 2.5 to get your 400 empty calories.

Uuummm - actually, yes it does. Those ones are brown colored diet beverages sweetened with Aspartame. If you had seen the news report on CTV and CBC on tv about this particular topic you'd have learned that the brown colored beverages are most risky of all other colored beverages because of the caramel used to create the color and flavour. Caramel is concentrated sugar that has been heated to burn it for the brown color and alter the flavour (thus "caramel" flavour), and heated browned sugar - caramel - contains more carcinogens than any other sweeteners or coloring agents. AND .... diet pops, whether they are brown or some other color, that are sweetened with the artificial sweetener Aspartame are even more of a health risk than HFCS or cane sugar. So, when you drink a brown colored diet pop you are drinking the worst of the worst for your health.

This has to be the most stupid and frivolous complaint since the great floodgate photo discrepancy..

The article is discussing sugar content in sodas. The caramel 'colouring' used in the two diet sodas shown does not add carbohydrates, and therefore no calories. Had they wished to make a point, they should have shown regular coke and pepsi. As for the allegations of aspartame being toxic, the jury is not in on that. hell sucralose is a chlorinated sugar molecule, but it isn't broken down by the body and has no impact on our metabolism.

The article also talks about diet sodas.

Sugary drinks boost blood pressure risk to heart

In the latest study, Brown's team found no consistent link between diet soda and blood pressure levels. But those who drank diet pop tended to have higher body mass index and lower levels of physical activity than those who did not.

Well, the article says those that consume pop ALSO took in 400 empty calories, which I think means other junk food consumed with the pop.

Is this a question? Of course the CBC staff is cerebrally challenged. Every last one of them!
