Proof of my earlier comments, some guy on my facebook just tried to argue with me that 5 is 20% more than 4. He got into university.

God I hope no one agrees with him...

He tried telling me math is subjective.

Basic Math.

Subjective.

Did you know 2+2 = 5 if you really want it to?

He's studying philosophy, I take it?

So, what about the guys spending all day working on science homework being expected to take classes that slap on major essays and readings too?

Yep. Lots of people get to university with 90+ averages. If they can't hack it, they shouldn't be in university. My roommate in first year was a huge pot head slacker. Failed out in the first term. Why was he let in, and then again 2 years later? Cause he had a 77% average.

The fuck?? My how times have changed. I had a buddy in high school that applied for UWO's engineering program after he graduated. Despite having a 97+% grade average coming out of grade 13, he was turned down. His grades weren't high enough 8O

(Liberal arts program)

Though I suspect the Eng requirements have changed as well. My brother applied to an Eng program and got in with high 80s. Unless Western's is 10% higher than everywhere else.

I also suspect the reason it's been dropped is the same reason everyone gets a trophy in little league baseball. Can't have anyone fail. Might hurt their fragile ego.

Honestly, no idea what he's studying, but I assume so, based on how he talks.

Apparently, his phrasing is subjective. Tell me something, how do you interpret this. (This works wonderfully since English isn't your first language)

$1:
I did 5 years of Highschool and 5 years of undergrad, that's how I roll

Great minds take 20% longer

Not what I was looking for but I assume you see the error in his statement. He's trying to tell me it can be interpreted differently than 5/4 is 1.25 or 125%. He's arguing that math lexicon is not universal and is subjective. I'm arguing that when you state larger in any format, you must use the small number as the number to derive the percentage change, something that is taught since grade school. Fuck I need to learn to shut my mouth.

It makes sense if he's only referring to the time in high school AND if he attended high school in Ontario.

Oh, you were still going on about that? That was over for me already.

Math his math, and if he is going to "roll" differently, he can even forget about working at McDonalds. After all, they won't really accept his interpretation of change...

2 + 2 = 5 for large enough values of 2.

With engineering I think they should drop the average. If you need stratospheric grades to get in, you end up with people who are really good at getting hugh grades, not necessarily the best engineers. Work experience should count, for all those smart tradesmen and technologists who decide they have what it takes, but maybe didn't get the best marks in school.

I paid 100%. No loans at all.

Actually, you paid 100% of the student-paid portion of your education cost, which is about 33% of the total cost. The government paid the other two thirds via post-secondary funding from tax revenue.

The issue is: As governments retreat from University funding and expect students to pay more out of their own pockets, your example becomes less and less possible, no matter how "frugal" the student is. That's espcially true if you go to a Univesity in an expensive city like Toronto or Vancouver.

It's not just the tuition. It's that high paying entry jobs are very rare these days. When I went to uni, I paid my way by going logging in the summer. You can save a lot of money when you're being paid a good hourly wage, working 6 days a week (ie overtime) and have to pay $2.50 a day for room and board.

I think there's something to his proposal. You would pay the true cost of your education, but you would be paying it when you've got a career going, with decent earnings. Nothing wrong with that.

He wants to have people who earn more pay more - so what, differential fees for uni depending on earnings? Really that's what our tax system is already supposed to do - higher tax rates on higher incomes. So we already have this system in place - the workers during my time as an undergrad subsidized my education, now my taxes are going to subsidize students in uni now.

The difference with his system is that it removes a barrier to entry into uni - high tuition at a time in their life when students have no money. I'm surprised Jeff spoke out against this scheme - he said tuition is about 1/3 of his annual costs. Wouldn't it be nice to have that removed?
