Unsound Unsound:
BartSimpson BartSimpson:
I'm thinking it might behoove Parliament to define what lands would be awarded to Quebeck just in the event that they ever do secede. This would serve to make the Firt Nations folks happier and it would also help to resolve any potential disputes ahead of time.

it's a nice idea, but I doubt Quebec would accept it without a fight. Personally I think they should get the traditional pre-confederation boundaries. That would leave most of the north in Canada's hands. They won't go for it because of all the resources up there, but there is an argument to be made that if they want a pure Quebec nation like what they think would've existed if the Plains of Abraham had gone the other way then they have to settle for the boundries of New France.

They shouldn't get Ruperts Land right off the bat, that territory was given to Quebec to administer by two acts of Federal Parliament.

What parliament giveth... parliament taketh.

Seems to me all FedGov would have to do is rescind those acts in order for the territory to revert to federal control.

Is there a lawyer in the house? Cause I'd love to hear the realistic chances on this happening. I'm giggling a little just thinking about someone like John Baird bringing this idea up in parliament...

I'm no lawyer but "Uhh, no". International law is founded on the principle of custom. Quebec has been as it is, politically, long enough to have established its borders under customary international law.

International law didn't stop the Federal government from chopping the Northwest Territories in two.

I wonder if Quebec could ultimately afford the costs after they separate and instantly become Greece?

It absolutely would if Quebec took the beef to the ICJ and asked for independence under the right of self-determining peoples. If Canada threatened to take back part of their territory under a crazy scheme like this, support for independence would skyrocket and Quebec would be gone. When the ICJ rules on the boundary dispute between the Canada and Quebec, customary law would determine the border. If Quebec elects to leave Confederation, they'll leave with their current borders.

I thought of that right after I hit submit. They'd have a case for self-determining peoples at the ICJ too. Hmmm.... Still, taking or even threatening to take Rupert's Land back is a pretty unlikely scenario.

So is separating. Most of them know which side of their bread is buttered.

I highly doubt we will ever see the actual separation of Quebec from Canada.

Personally, I'd rather not see it come to that.

At this point you have a province that doesnt like Canada and doesnt like Anglos, with a separatist government in control.
i cant see the point of Quebec remaining in Canada. In fact i'd like to see a Canada wide referendum on whether we keep Quebec in Canada or set this ungrateful welfare province adrift to achieve its dreams of a French only utopian backwater.

As long as Quebec doesn't decide that at some point it wants to become part of the United States.

With all their hydro? Minerals and other natural resources? Arctic and Atlantic coastlines? St. Lawrence Seaway? Manifest destiny. You'd sign Quebec up as a new state faster than the wind from a duck's ass if they came knocking.
