This goes beyond the fire chiefs meltdown to the town in general as the town ignored all her complaints about ths subject until the.media caught wind, and then afterward all they did was send her a letter "regretting" the chief's "inappropriate response". Its clearly a message that as an outsider in this very small town, shes a second-class citizen.

Most small towns I've been in are fine with new comers. Yes there was one I lived in that when people said "you know the nice new family" could mean they moved there 3 generations ago. But if you move into a small town expecting things to be like it was in the "big city" there will be problems. He shouldn't have gone off on her but you shouldn't call them Goobers either. I'm betting there is a back story to this. At a guess I would say she has big city ideas that don't work in small towns.

If the complains were unfounded then yea they would be ignored. You can only explain things so meny times before you just start to ignore people. And really just how meny people in a town of 312 have the quals or want to be Fire Chief. Betting they will play nice the media till the shit storm moves on to some other random sillyness that everyone will follow like lemings.

I'm sure that in a town of 312, she already made quite a name for herself by calling them to complain about a barking dog, garbage pickup and snow plowing.

These would be totally normal and anonymous inquiries in a big city but in a small town like that, everyone knows who is calling and its probably not done that often. So I have no doubt that she didn't endear herself to some of the locals.

But even if she were the most unpleasant and intollerable human on earth, there is nothing that excuses the fire chief's actions. Nothing. She is a resident and a taxpayer and entitled to the same level of service as anyone else and she is certainly entitled to be free from ethnic slurs and insults from public servants.

The fact that the town decided to circle the wagon and protect their kinfolk is what earns them title of goober. To them I say don't act like a Goober if you don't want to be called one.

I live in 'small town' Alberta. (a hamlet of 62 peeps). We also have a volunteer fire brigade. The fire chief was out of line, but then so was the complainant.
The call to 911 necessitated ALL members of the FD to 'drop what they were doing' and rush to the scene. A call to either the local GRC detatchment or the 'after hours' # to the county would be all that is required.

I wasn't there but it seems to me a fire, threatening property could require a call to the fire department. Even if she was mistaken by the intensity of the fire she was still not criminal for calling.

1) declare an individual to be an asshole (or a Nazi) simply because of their ethinicity, especially when there is no other info in the story to suggest this person acted inappropriately.

2) based on the assumptions in (1), assert that it's perfectly ok for public servants to swear at them and hurl ethnic slurs while doing their JOB.
