There is another legacy of 9/11 and that is apathy. In July I helped my daughter relocate to Pensacola FL. Now this is a very patriotic part of the country. Our largest naval air station is there and one of our largest air Force Bases is just up the street. Every where you go you see signs for military discounts, and signs claiming that the business in veteran owned. My daughter teaches 3rd grade. She said that her school did absolutely nothing for 9/11. No moment of silence, no ceremony, nothing. She spoke to her kids about it and they had never heard of it. They had no idea what she was talking about. That is pathetic.

That is pathetic.

Sadly I do feel as though we largely moved off of it.

Maybe it's time. We can only be sad for so long. I'm not saying forget, but there comes a time in the grieving where you have to put it behind you and deal with the now.

I was in NY for a trade show. Hawking heavy equipment I was designing at the time.
Happened while I was eating breakfast in the Hotel restaurant. Saw it on the TV, then went outside and looked north and there was the smoke.

The sales manager on the trip was the lone American in the group and that Friday was going to take us to see the twin towers before we headed back to Alberta.

Couldn't fly home, had to rent a mini van and took shifts driving all the way back to Alberta.

One of the things that's made me feel old lately is our Hockey billets last year talking about learning about 9-11 in history class. They weren't born yet...

8-9 yrs old and not knowing about 9/11 I can kind of understand. Their parents were probably in middle school when the attacks happen. At that age I new very little about Vietnam besides we had been in some kind of war there.

Good point stratos.

9/11 was a historic day the young will learn about just as we learned about the wars and other major events that happened before our time.

It's seriously hard to believe it's been 18yrs. Good Lord, I remember the day so well and, at times, it's still shocking and hard to comprehend.

Totally. You kind of forget about it for a while. And then I’ll be watching and older movie or tv show and I see them on the screen and then a shadow crosses my heart and the memories come back of what happened.

Isn't it amazing how often the NY City skyline happens to be seen in a part of a movie or TV show? I will relate right away and realize "oh yeah, this was filmed before 2001".

"NYPD Blue" as well. IIRC, they didn't even stop filming for 9/11. They just carried on.

Pretty sure they're in the opening for Sopranos while the theme song is playing.

I know this sounds crazy but I have nice memories of 9/11 because it was one of the last times my family was really together as a family. It was before my brother died and before my parents got into drugs. My parents saw the news on TV and kept us home from school and we just stayed close watching the TV all day and going outside to see the weirdly quiet sky and listen to the silence from the freeway. We lived in LA back then and to hear so much quiet was really weird.

I’m glad to hear it, something that day that wasn’t horrifying. Sounds like a last good moment before the family situation turned very bad.
