Reminds me of the story that made headlines a short time back, about the Timmy`s server who was fired for handing out a timbit to a crying child. The local Co-op bakery we belong to is always giving cookies to young children.

Ditto with the bakery we go to as well. Free cookie to every kid under the age of 8 or so. Kids are happy and the parents are impressed enough to keep coming back, which explains why these folks have managed to stay in profits for about forty years. Great publicity, costs them next to nothing out of the volume of treats they make, and customers are guaranteed to come back.

You're either counting pennies and being an asshole with Ebenezer Scrooge, or you're not. There's not much grey area in between.

The kid, just doing a good deed. Her money or company money, no matter.

Would you say the same if it was a computer?

How about a car?

A house?

Yes, yes, I know...this is "different", "it's just a cup of coffee", etc, etc.

It's called principals...this girl has none. I wouldn't trust her with my pen, let alone a job.

Oh good grief, get ahold of yourself. A house and a cup of coffee?

this where penny wise pound foolish is really demonstrated. Anyone with any business savvy knows you have to spend money to make it. We got a shitload of free stuff from the dealership in December when we bought our new truck....hats and sweatshirts. They spent maybe $100, but we spent about 60 K in the end

Places like 7/11/Mac's/MCD's/Timmie'/etc dump so much unsold coffee during and at the end of the day it's unbelievable. Each store or franchise could give a free cup of coffee to a hundred different homeless every day and it wouldn't even budge their daily revenues towards the red.

This is bullshit. The girl had a heart, helped someone out on a brutally inclement day, and paid the cost of the coffee anyway. The owner's an asshole, plain and simple, and he could have just warned her not to do it again instead of tossing his usual "ay-yai-yai-yai!" Third World temper tantrum and firing here. He deserves every bit of excoriation he gets for firing her for doing the humane thing. I hope he loses a thousand times more in lost profit from people shunning his store for what he did than he ever would have from giving some poor slob a cup of free coffee.

R=UP

Having spent more than my fair share of time in the service industry, I know that coffee cost maybe 10 cents ( 9 of which was the paper cup). It is inconsequential in the bottom line of any company and odds are it probably would have went down the drain anyways.

It was an over-reaction on the owne's part nothing more. A reprimand was about as far as it should have gone, especially considering she paid for it anyways.

I dealt with a similar scenario once. I worked as night auditor at a downtown Winnipeg dive. Lots of "monthly rates." Lots of reminding the "girls of the night" that there's "No Johns allowed in rooms." The owners were quite clear that they didn't want any homeless people in the lobby, such as it was.

Anyways buddy wanders one cold blustery night (we're talking Winnipeg cold here, -40 or so and that's the days before we included wind chill in the temperature). Asks if he can just warm up for a few minutes. Sorry, I can't throw a homeless guy out on the street in that weather. Guy takes off his beat up old boot and he's wearing Safeway bags for socks. And the smell! My god. Anyways, it's clear from teh smell he's got advanced tissue necrosis (third or fourth degree frostbite) and teh meat on his feet is just peeling off.

Told the guy he could go sleep in the lobby bathroom. Tried to talk him into the hospital but he wasn't having none of it. Had to clear him out before teh boss came in in the morning, and he was so grateful. Poor old guy probably didn't last long after that I imagine.

Anyways, she should have fessed up to her boss when confronted, but then again maybe her boss was a prick. He sounds like he might have been. Glad for the happy ending here though.

Methinks everyone should exercise a little 'pay it forward'.

Kudos to the clerk.

Laugh it up hypocrites.

This type of action is exactly how corporations squeezed out employees.

Same with how the middle class has been eroded.

Small increments at a time, with people going "get the fuck over it".

I don't think he should have fired her. But shouldn't just have let it go, either. Lots of room between those two poles. Making racist remarks about it certainly isn't helpful either.

No, he should have said good idea young lady. Here's a hundred bucks from the thousands I make every week, buy these homeless people all the coffee they can drink.

That's a 1000 cups of coffee (at cost) a week. I am sure the homeless people who have nothing and are outside in freezing temps would enjoy it.

I doubt she made more than minimum wage herself. She paid the buck for the coffee. Kudos.

Now, to play Devil`s Advocate. We have a business that gives away free coffee to vagrants....word spreads and before you know it, more start showing up. Now you have people outside who are pan handlers, accosting regular paying customers. as they are wont to do. These customers will go elsewhere because they don`t want to be bothered and the business ends up losing revenue. This is a very possible and probable scenario, and perhaps this is what the owner was thinking.

Sure that's possible. He could also donate to a homeless shelter or soup kitchen and give credit to the clerk for the idea. There's a million ways to have handled this better than firing a new employee for being generous.

FFS I never heard so much drivel in tow pages. Half the posters are as big an ass as the girl's Boss.
If there was a higher up working at the time, she should have told them (not asked them) she was giving a coffee away. If she was working alone she used her own discretion.
If her boss doesn't allow her that much, fucking dump the pot of scalding coffee over his head and give him reason to fire her.
They throw shitloads of coffee out because it has to be fresh every twenty minutes anyway.

Oh fuck off. That's a ridiculous response. It was coffee and the fucking the cup's the only costable part.
