I know opinions are like assholes and everyone has one, but do you honestly think that a pitcher standing there calling for a pitch from the catcher while the batter adjusts his cup is action I'd hate to see your reaction to a sport that involves actual physical activity. 8)

I played a lot of competitive hockey and rugby in my day too. Different sets of skills. But we were discussing the viewing of these sports, not their relative physical exertion levels.

If you want a boring sport, try football. 3 hours of air time, 60 minutes of a running game clock and about 2 minutes of actual game-play.

As a comparison, what's the more entertaining movie: Die Hard or the Godfather? Quantum or Solice or Remains of the Day? Predator or Lawrence of Arabia? Do you want to sit there mindlessly and have the action wash over you or are you prepared to do a little thinking while you watch?

Football is a boring sport? You've just contradicted yourself.

Football, much like baseball, is a lot of strategy. A true fan understands and appreciates the match-ups and decisions during the game...according to you.

You cannot on one hand call insult people who don't understand baseball and come back with the same argument about football that you just shot down.

I'm not a football fan at all. Never have been. I'm a big baseball fan, although unlike your analysis, I don't really care about all the stats and BS between plays. I just genuinely like watching the game.

People can be fans of a certain sport and not get a chubby every time there's a new batter at the plate or a replacement LB comes off the bench.

Agreed, but that's no contradiction. I readily admit I don't understand football the same way a true football fan likely does. Likewise, a lot of people find history boring, but clearly those that understand it, study it and love it don't. Whose opinion should we accept? The informed and educated or the not?

Hold on just a damn minute. I didn't insult anyone. And you're absolutely right that it's "the same argument": people who find baseball boring don't understand baseball. I find football boring; maybe that's because I don't understand it well enough. Or, maybe I just think that a sport that boils down to "violence punctuated by committee meetings" isn't something that I'd be interested in.

To each his own. My comment was never meant to insult, but rather to state that the REASON one may find something boring is a lack of understanding. I've been a baseball fan in a hockey country my whole life. I've heard the "baseball is boring" quip hundreds of times. Never once, however, has one of those people, when questioned further, been able to demonstrate much understanding of baseball.

Sure, but for most, if they CONTINUE to be casual fans, a greater knowledge, understanding and appreciation may come. It's taken me DECADES to learn what I know about baseball. I wouldn't expect someone to "get it" as I do without putting in the time.

ROTFL Lemmy, I so wanted to give you rep for that great description of football but it says I gotta spread more around before I can. Well +1 at least anyway

So those who find baseball boring, lack the intelligence to understand it....but you find football and golf boring, so perhaps you're not intelligent enough to understand either of those sports.

Yes, you did. You claimed those who find baseball boring to lack intelligence. That's not always the case.

I'm sure you're a fairly smart dude, and just because you find golf or football boring doesn't make you any less intelligent than the next guy.

Not at all. I never said anything remotely like that. I said they don't understand the sport. Not understanding doesn't have anything to do with intelligence. I can't speak Chinese. I lack the knowledge to converse in Chinese, but I'm pretty sure I'm intelligent enough to learn it.

OnTheIce OnTheIce:

I find them boring to watch on tv, not because I'm not intelligent enough to understand them, but because I haven't given those sports attention enough to learn them in-and-out. Maybe, however, the reason I haven't learned more about football is that I'm TOO intelligent to be entertained by it. But I certainly admit ignorance about the sport.

OnTheIce OnTheIce:

That's a goddamn lie. I never said that. I never made any equivocation between "understanding" and "intelligence". You're trolling now.

I never said it did. No attempts by you to put words in my mouth will make that so.

Who isn't? I'd rather see a spontaneous hockey fight between two guys mad as hell at each other than to see the two designated team-goons square off out of bravado. :)

Uhm, Lemmy.

Lemmy Lemmy:
Baseball is like history or economics or astronomy: it's boring to those not intelligent enough to understand it.

Page 2 of the thread. Sorry.

BTW thanks for the rep points. You probably wish you could bring them back now. :?

I stand corrected and I retract that statement. I would like to replace the word "intelligent" with "educated" and, if I can get my foot out of my yap for a couple of minutes, I'm going to go take down a pork roast.

Enjoy the rep points, I'd give you a couple more for keeping me honest if I could.

No problem, and I agree 100% with your change of words. [B-o]

A couple of rep points back to you for manning up and not trying to claim you were "misunderstood" like so many others on this site.
