They are not robots (although with the media training they got, they sure sounded like it ) and this picture is an amazing picture, imho. Of course she is pissed at herself. She's allowed to, too.

She'll get over it. Now the media should learn that same lesson and just be proud. Unless they can do a better job.

The OP is misleading. She wasn't cheated out of the gold for the individual vault. She sat down on her landing for her second vault. It wasn't the judges who cost her the gold medal. The fast she won the silver medal shows just how fantastic her first vault was.

Is a long distance runner subject to penalty if they don't smile when they run?

Judged events are silly because they are using subjective evaluation to name someone best. It is possible for me to win a gold medal if the judges think I'm cool. I would walk out, try and do a back flip land on my face and walk off a gold medal winner because the judged thought I was great.
