I voted the all above option, except the Britain Ancestory part. That would mean Americans get to be called Canadians

Actually that wasn't an option European ancestry was though.

Brenda has a point. I'm second generation and my dad came in '29 and went back in '74. He left here a Brit and returned a Canadian....LOL.

The americans address this with their restriction that only US born can become president.

my definition of a true Canadian is anyone who gets citizenship.. or was born here.. pledges allegence to the Country. is proud to say they are Canadian and accepts the system and Canadian values as theirs..wants to integrate into Canadian society and totally leaves the shit they left to come here for a better life...and understands what a privledge it is to live in the best country in the world

So the Quebec seperatists are not Canadians?

Yeah! Pretty much! By definition that used to be called treason and still is in many lands.

obviously the separatists dont want to be Canadian or there wouldnt be that movement.. they want to be Quebecois(e). and there are many other immigrant groups who dont want to be Canadian.. multiculturalism is fragmenting and dividing the people. we need to make this an election issue. call or write your local MP. or if someone calls to solicit your vote express your concern re: multiculturalism..

You don't need to be a citizen to understand that priviledge...

And I think I don't need to take a citizenshiptest to feel Canadian... If my hubby takes that one, I will be a citizen anyhow, so what did I do then?

um... what? If your husband takes a test you're automatically a citizen by default? I thought that would be the case for children... but not adults.

I'm not so sure that's true anyway. My neighbour took out Canadian citizenship, but his wife is still a German citizen.

You become a citizen by being married to a Canadian citizen. Your neighbours wife is dual.

I'm a Québécois nationalist and I'm fully Canadian, sorry. And I'm not because somedy took a map of Noth America and decided to call "Canada" the half that wasn't called "America". Even if the (con)federation would be called Borealia, or even if Québec would secede, I would still consider myself Canadian.

I am Canadian because my ancestors called themselves so, not because I was given a peice of paper with a maple leaf on it after I landed here, or because I happen to have my feet inside the modern Canadian frontiers.

The litmus test is if you vote for Steven, not Steffawn.
Drink Jack Daniels and have the girl's panties made of "Red Ensign Material"

That way real Canadians will never pull them down.

Now, to answer the original question of the topic... I voted for the third option, but I think it's more complicated than that.

By their own and adamant admissions, no, they are not.

Well... most of them reject the actual defenition of the term "Canadian" because it automatically equates Canada (and the nagetive connotations associated with it), so I guess we could say they are not.

Personaly I refuse to abandon this terminology even if genarations upon genarations of foreigners hijacked my identity. I'm still un vrai Canayen.

I doubt that, since she can't vote in our elections.

Also, I don't think citizenship is automatic.

The only thing she needs to do, is fill out a form and pay the fees.
