U.S. moves to extend daylight time

(CBC) - Canada could be left out in the dark unless it follows an American plan to extend daylight time by two months.

The U.S. Congress on Tuesday adopted the provision, which is part of a sweeping new energy plan. It would mean people would turn their clocks forward one hour on the first weekend of March and "fall back" on the final weekend in November.

Currently in Canada and the U.S., daylight time runs from April through October. The exception in Canada is Saskatchewan, which keeps its clocks the same throughout the year.

Congress believes the extension would trim energy costs by cutting the need for artificial light in the evenings.

The change, due to take effect this autumn if approved by U.S. President George W. Bush, could cause headaches for Canadians during March and November, the two months the two countries would be out of sync.

Television and travel schedules could be affected, while the change could also mean implications for business operations between the two countries.

Canadian critics of the adjustment argue children will be walking to school in darkness while drivers may face increased morning black ice, which hasn't melted in the sun.

Nice to see the US Congress working on the most important of matters. Instead of promoting more energy conservation the usual ways (energy-efficient products, more fuel-efficient cars, etc), they're going to screw around with the clocks.

Ummm, there would still be the same amount of darkness so the need for streets would be exactly the same. People having their lights on in the house will have them on longer in the mornings and home lighting is a very small fraction of power usage. I don't see where the savings would be here.

I agree with xerxes, develop more efficient products. Offer rebates on these new products to increase their use and decrease their manufacturing costs. Offer X-prizes to companies that develop more efficient products at acceptable costs to the consumer.

There are hundreds of ways to promote and implement the conservation of energy and I just don't see extending daylight savings time as being one of them.

I agree. I guess they are suggesting that we use less energy in the morning than we do in the evening.

I don't understand why we get up so late.... the sun rises at 6:00, why does the day 'start' at 9:00 for most businesses (or even 8:00, in my case)?

xerxes, i couldnt have said it any better myself.

i personally do not see much of a difference with the time switch-a-roo. this new one just seems ridiculous, fixing the time wont solve the problem. PROMOTING energy conservation will.

I think Saskatchewan has the right idea when it comes to turning clocks forward and backward.

What's the point of having only three months on standard time and the rest of the year on Daylight Savings? But then it could be worse. All of China is one time zone, Beijing's. It would be like all of Canada being on Atlantic time.

What is Saskatchewan's idea for clock turning? Spring back, fall ahead?

They don't change their clocks at all.

I'd prefer to go with the Newfies, only instead of 9:30 it would be 9:45. ;)

LOL..... Maybe 9:52 would be better for BC than either 9:30 or 9:45. Would be easier for Premier Campbell to call his lawyer when he's pissed drunk in Hawaii.

PS: still think Sask, springs back and falls ahead

I think that both countries should just stay the same...*sighs* the US is always trying to change something that already works out fine...
