That's very true, not enough young people taking up the trades. If they were smart, they would, great money.

I still think it's because a large portion of the young people entering the work force don't actually want or think they have to work. There sure seems to be an attitude of entitlement amongst young folks. Are they in for a shock when they figure out that the world doesn't give a shit if they make it or not. I tried to talk my nephew into getting into the trades and coming up to the patch, nope, he's happy with his mall job selling cell phones. He could be making triple the money plus in just a couple years, silly.

That's what I was planning on doing, my dad years ago had this guy who fixed something in his house. I forget what. He was talking to about the trades jobs and how much education needed to get the job. You know, info for my benefit. He was explaining how it doesn't require much education to get started in it. However the biggest benefit of the jobs regarding education is they allow you to work and learn about the job while giving you enough time to do school and get paid for the work when you start out. So generally you are paying for your education and won't end up in debt plus getting the job experience of the job and already got started on doing it so soon as you finish school. You can get right into it and earn more money.

They make a crap load of money depending on what you do. Some make more than a 100 grand a year. After certon years of doing it of course. It's a great area to work. He also said that all the older workers are starting to retire so many spots are opening up.

Also if any women have lost there jobs here or stay at home moms. There this Avon Pyramid thing that you can do. All you do is go around hand out flyers that are in your name. You get the orders and order the stuff requested and give it to them and collect the money. You take your share and send the rest back to Avon. The person that refered you gets a cut and so on and so on. However you generally get 50% of the profits you make.

If you get lucky and make a lot of sales, you can get a lot of cash. Generally most of them make 200-300 dollars per week of collecting or two weeks. Atleast that is what my mom gets as she joined and is doing it for extra cash. Some weeks are harsher than others. Just all depends on how lucky you get when making sales.

Would be good for stay at home moms as its fairly easy to do and doesn't take much time or for single parent moms who need extra income. If you're interested, you can contact me and I can send you the details and get my mom to refer you. She gets a small % of your sales as she refered you which you can't avoide as it's part of the pyramid thing. However it's a very small bit and it's generally a good way to make some extra cash in these economic times.

I worked in the financial sector for the past 3 years. In June 08 I was laid off along with over 100 of my colleagues and got 9 weeks severance. Two weeks later, I got a call from the company telling me there were 2 positions in a different department available and I had been recommended for rehire. I was back at work before the month was over, only as a 'contract' employee with no benefits or sick days and my salary had been converted to an hourly pay. On the plus side, they let me keep my severance pay. I worked in that role for over a year, with a short-term contract which they just kept renewing over and over during the next 14 months. The hourly pay worked out in my favour because I worked around 50 hours a week and made some really good money in overtime pay. I had to 'milk it' a little bit now and then to justify all the OT but nobody really seemed to care that much since I got my work done on time and there was usually plenty of work coming in. The employer made it clear that the site was closing down completely before the end of 2009 and relocating the work to its sites in India and Butt Fuck nowhere USA in order to save costs, so I knew that sooner or later I would be out of work.

I was better off than most who lost their jobs because of all the extra money I was able to make and the fact that I knew the end was coming. I used the extra cash I made to pay down my credit card and stashed the rest in savings.

My job finally ended at the end of Aug 2009 and as a contract worker, there was no severance this time. Ive been living on EI and my savings ever since, dont really expect to find a new job til the new year at this point so I stopped looking about a month ago.

I consider myself lucky compared to most laid off workers in that I was able to save up enough money in a short period of time and that I live with my gf who still has a job, so there is someone to split expenses with. I have enough savings that I should be able to get by until the end of April, barring any unforseen circumstances, but obviously I live on a very tight budget now as almost all my money goes to basic living expenses. I can only imagine what others are going through, who didnt have the fortunate circumstances that I did.

Not to mention those who never saw the recission coming and are in servere debt and got kids to drain there budgets. Hate to be them. My mom's friend has cancer and one of her sons is in a school in scotland to be a cyropractor or however you spell it. She had to file for bankrupcy a couple years ago. She spent everything she had to keep her soon in school. Really sucked.

Been there and done that BF.
I worked 23 years in the banking industry before being laid off, but that was 10 years ago.
Good severance pay that I partially used to go back to school for a year.

I've been working as a DBA/Web developer/Help desk for daycares and schools.
No shortage of work there unless the economy gets so bad, people start pulling their kids out of daycares.

Sounds a lot like my experience. I saw the writing on the wall and knew I was going to be laid off, it was just a matter of when, so we skrimped and saved and paid off debts, so that when I was laid off, the only payment we had was the mortgage.

Since then, I've worked PT and collected EI, so my take home is not too bad, and coupled with my wife's income, we still can afford to go out for dinner once and awhile and have saved up enough that we are thinking of buying another house next spring, before prices start to inch up here again.

I've been in the IT business for the past decade and it is really just part of the business to not have a 'permanent' job. In the past year I've lost two jobs but have landed on my feet and right now I'm actually ahead of where I was (income-wise) when I was working for Intel a few years back.

The week I started my current job Intel called and invited me back and I said no. Going back to a place that had sent my job to Costa Rica because the numbers looked good on a spreadsheet didn't work out for me. I'm pretty happy where I am and the extra income means I'm looking at retirement in another 10-12 years. :D

I would be happy if there was anything here that paid more than $8/hr. Hell, I would be happy if I got a different response to an interview than: "the elderly might not understand you because of your light accent" or "You're not in town, how are you going to get here in Winter?" or "sorry, we hired someone with more Canadian experience".

Fortunately, I even have no felt the recession. But the unemployment rate was about 10%. I think now the recession is behind us. The bank of Israel raised the interest rate in second time. And our company is looking for employees now.

whenever I have been laid off in the pasty 20 years, I've switched into 'contract employee ' mode. Many companies would love to hire an experienced worker for only a few days. Before, I find 6 places to work, one of the places has always offered me full time employement.

Be careful what you agree to work for, because most places will only offer you what you are currently making. For me, I've always demanded 10-15% more than what I can make at a full time job. Most employers dont mind paying this if they only need you for 2 weeks and you are experienced. When the job eventually becomes full time, the 10-15% increase has typically help my income more than relying on benevolent employers to raise my income on anual reviews.

Did I mention childcare is more expensive than that?
