I've got an old matress which is kind of moldy and pretty much unsusable because of that. Anyone got any ideas on how I should get rid of it?

And let's say you don't have a car.

Buy a new one from a firm that will haul away the old one.

Assuming you don't have your own mattress launcher, I suggest getting ahold of a hacksaw, some wire snips, and a box cutter and start cutting it into one-inch-square pieces. Take a handful of these pieces each day with you for a walk in a nearby park and let the wildlife deal with it.

Note: geese can swallow the springs if they're cut into pieces no longer than and inch and a half, but smaller ducks and pigeons don't tend to manage as well.

You might be able to get the garbage truck to take it away if you call them in advance.

from a google query:

"Call your local municipality, sanitation department or garbage collector. They usually have provisions for picking up larger items, but you may need to make arrangements in advance."

I thought about sneaking around those new neighbourhoods where they're building houses and throw it in those construction garbage bins. :)

or fire.

But i think this is the best idea, I'll call the city.
