Canada has 5 year terms. The US has 4. It's one of the small differences between our countries. Stephen Harper appeared to do everything he could to make us unto the US. No need.

But there is a practical reason. I want dramatic changes to tax. I just submitted a document to Bill Morneau, Finance Minister of Canada. They put multiple requests in my Facebook feed asking for input to this year's budget; Ok, so I gave it.

Phased in over 3 years, the first has to be retroactive to January 1st. The last will be January 1, 2020, so we have to delay the election for the last to take effect before the election. Repealing the fixed election days law would allow that. A spring 2020 election would allow March 2020 budget just before the election.
