Canada probably will be annexed by the US...

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/ ... ory/Front/
Hudson bay corporation will most likely be bought out by the american-based target store.
So thats Tim hortons, molson, now most likely the Bay/hudsonbay corporation that are now owned my american companies... its only a matter of time before we completely sell out

Coors and Molson just merged, Tim Horton's is reported to have an American partner now. Its on this site somewhere.

You don't want Target. Another discount chain that suppresses employee rights.

Until the Canadian government takes a stand on this and re-works our trade deal with the US, we can't force employers to accept that worker's have rights though. I don't think that's likely to happen under the leadership of Paul "Sweatship" Martin. Under NAFTA there is very little we can do to stop Target from buying the HBC.

I'm wondering what happens to all of the HBC's historical records if this goes through. They have extensive archives of not just their own, but Canada's history that they make available to researchers and historians. The Canadian government should make it very clear right now that any sale of the HBC to any foreign interest, and those records become the property of the Canadian government.

They probably should be, RH. It's never been an issue before though because the HBC took good care of the records and made them available to researchers. A corporation without the history of the HBC and no interest in Canada beyond as a marketplace is unlikely to provide the same care or access.

The Canadian government needs to make it very clear, before any deal is struck, that the documents will be provided to this country at no charge.

its only a matter of time before we completely sell out

Before we completely sell out what?

Let me remind you that these are privately owned companies. You may 'want' to view them as Canadian icons, they are not. They are owned by shareholders who want and expect to see a fair return on their investment dollar, and so - it goes to the highest bidder. Welcome to democracy and capitalism.

On the emotional front, it is too bad HBC is departing, but it was either that or completely down the toilet; after all it was HBC fur traders that opened up this great country and brought commerce and firewater to the locals and created the Metis.

That doesn't matter Karra. This is an important Canadian icon. After 300 years of business, no one should sell out. Name one business that has been in it this long, with the history that the HBC has.....

This is just wrong. This is a major peice of Canadian history. Probably the biggest to ever leave Canada. In my eyes, its very sad, and I hope our petition does something.

This is just sad. I propose we get a rally together and march on Ottawa before anything is signed. We as Canadian and historically loving people cannot allow this to stand.

I was doing some research... HBC has really been around for 300 years.... Holly Shlt... I hope they stay Canadian, I already have signed the petition. Hope it makes a difference. This is an open market afterall and Ottawa has been reluctant to aide big Canadian companies lately. Hope they can find invertors to keep this Canadian Icon.
