In their own words : how Canadian Muslims are responding to the London bombings
by Judeoscope

I- Victimization and fear-mongering in Arab and Islamic organizations' public statements

A persistent common thread in Canadian Islamic organizations’ responses to the London bombings was to cast Canadian Muslims as potential targets of popular wrath or state-sanctioned discrimination, with the exception of one statement, which, though telling Muslims not to fall into the victim’s role, nevertheless does imply Muslims are being victimized in Canada.

- The Canadian Islamic Congress, July 7, 2005 :

"Hours after the terrorist attacks in London this morning the Canadian Islamic Congress issued a brief statement condemning the crime. It said irrespective of who claims responsibility for the bombings CIC hopes and prays that Canadian Muslims will not pay a price for being found guilty by association"
www.canadianislamiccongress.com . . .

- The Muslim Council of Montreal, July 7, 2005 :

"Our hearts and sympathies go out to the victim's families of this terrible attack," stated MCM President Salam Elmenyawi (…) "There is no confirmation of who is responsible for today's bombings, but regardless of who committed this terrible crime, MCM calls on the media, political leaders, so called terrorism and Islam experts and the general public to proceed with caution and be careful not to generalise and start accusing Islam and Muslims, as such attitude is counter-productive," cautioned Elmenyawi.
www.muslimcouncil.org . . .

- Sheema Khan, Chair of the Canadian Council on American-Islamic Relations, The Globe and Mail, July 13 2005 :

" (…) if there is one segment of Canadian society that has lived with the constant fear of terrorist attacks, it is Canadian Muslims and Arabs. They know they will bear the brunt of the fallout. (…) Is internment in the works? Mass deportations of non-citizens? Limits placed on individual rights and freedom of movement? Are there plans to protect Muslims against the ensuing backlash? Our government has been conspicuously silent on its contingency plans"
www.caircan.ca . . .

- Salam Elmenyawi, President of the Montreal Muslim Council, July 14:

"I expect that we would also face a backlash in Canada as a result to London blasts and the media position on this issue, in addition to the many opportunists who are trying to use this incident to advance their own agenda. To challenge these assertions, and to protect Muslim's rights in Canada we must warn our community first against these unprovoked attacks against Muslims and document any such attacks, even the small ones, as they happen".
www.montrealmuslimnews.net . . .

- Omar Alghabra, President of the Canadian Arab Federation, The Montreal Gazette, July 15 2005:

"Arab and Muslim Canadians feel they are treated like a 'fifth column' and always viewed with suspicion. (…) They should not to get caught up in the role of victim, and should not be distracted by ignorance or deliberate prejudice that is perpetuated in the current environment"
www.ymlp.com . . .

II- Denial and conspiracy theories on Arab and Muslim websites

Some Canadian Muslim authors have called the London bombings just retribution for British involvement in the Afghan and Iraq wars, while others have denied Islamic involvement in the attacks, implying they were coordinated by the CIA, British secret services or Israel. Yet others, oddly enough, have managed to tow both lines. As well, Montreal Islamic websites have been publishing papers penned by non Muslims stating Israel masterminded the attacks.

- From 9/11 to 7/7: Crusade Intensifies by Abid Ullah Jan, Canada Media Monitors, July 8 2005
(Abid Ullah Jan, a self-avowed Taliban-sympathizer, lives in Ottawa):

"The staged terrorist attacks are the occasions when even the most honest and sincere of us lose sight of the reality and start taking things on the face value alone (…) This was not a ‘shock and awe’ in London because UK was not attacked by aggressors from outside after years of lying through their teeth to the whole world. It was just another inside job: another staged 9/11 to intensify the war on Islam (…) It only needs a cool mind to understand that the attack only benefits empires desperate to maintain a foothold in the Middle East without further eroding public opinion. Some reports show that Israeli embassy in London was warned before the attack and Israel insists that it doesn’t mean it has also carried out the attack. Associated Press, however, reported that Nathanyahu change his planes due to bomb warning"
canada.mediamonitors.net . . .
- Taking the Battle to the Enemy by Elias Akleh, Arab 2000 (Toronto-based Arab news site), July 11 2005:

"While the other state-terror attacks [American, British and Israeli] had caused hundreds of thousands of deaths the London attack caused only 50 deaths. Britains (sic) just had a "little" taste of their own medicine. (…) This attack, the same as 9/11 attack, has an Israeli element; a loose thread, if pursued, might lead us to the truth about the attack. It was reported that a senior Israeli official from the Israeli Embassy had mentioned that Scotland Yard had called the security officer at the Israeli Embassy "few minutes before the explosions" to warn him of possible attacks. Israel was holding an economic conference near the scene of one of the explosions. Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli Finance Minister, was scheduled to attend the conference the same time the explosions took place. Upon hearing these reports the Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon hastened to issue an order forbidding all Israeli Ministers from commenting on London attack. (…) Was it an Al-Qaeda terrorist attack, was it an Iraqi retaliation, or was it an inside conspiracy with the knowledge of some pro-Israeli elements in Scotland Yard, who called to warn the Israeli Embassy?
www.arab2000.net . . .

- Will Non-Muslim Please Stand up by Abid Ullah Jan, MontrealMuslims.ca, July 13 2005
(Abid Ullah Jan, a self-avowed Taliban-sympathizer, lives in Ottawa):

"Many people take it for granted when I write about Muslims’ holocaust in the making or the impending mass exodus of Muslims from the non-Muslim majority countries (…) The xenophobic extremists who cannot stand Muslims with beards, headscarves and "strange smelling food" in their midst, can stage a few more bombings and there you go: All Muslims would be guilty until proven innocent. (…) Who gains is not difficult to guess now. These are the Zionists and neo-cons that are out to hasten the establishment of greater Israel. (…) The Western village needs to stand up seriously to the tyrants who have turned a blind eye to the real enemies within (…) I doubt that the Western village will realize who its real enemies are until it sees Israel replacing the US as the Ruling State and materializing its long awaited dream of greater Israel for a while".
www.montrealmuslims.ca . . .

- Tony Blair Ordered The London Bombings by Michael James, MontrealMuslims.ca, July 10 2005

"The intelligence services had been caught off balance by Mossad's unwelcome intrusion into matters they considered a strictly British affair. Having the headline "Israel Warned Blair Two Days Before Attack" splashed across the front pages of an otherwise complicit print media was something to be avoided at all costs. Binyamin Netanyahu would go ahead with preparations for his press conference and allow himself to be "advised" by Scotland Yard shortly after the first blast. If MI5 were to dally in their attacks on commuters, he would have no choice but to claim that Scotland Yard had warned him prior to the event, and the Blair government would have to hope that the British people would not notice the obvious irregularity."
www.montrealmuslims.ca . . .

- Explosions In London - Who Stands To Gain? Israel Warned, Cover-up In Progress, MontrealMuslims.ca, July 7 2005

"Netanyahu was warned before the first blast. Israel are now denying they got a warning. (…) Just like the events of 9/11, ask yourself, who stands to gain from this? Could this have been organized by any group other than one who has direct unlimited access to all areas of London's transport grid at all times? (…) The military-industrial complex has the motive in this latest atrocity. Every major western government, including the British, has been caught red-handed carrying out bombings against their own people and blaming it on external enemies"

Conclusion

From the quoted statements by Canadian Islamic organizations transpires non factual victimology. The announced wave of anti-Muslim violence in the aftermath of 9-11 and other Islamist terrorist attacks has failed to materialize. In fact, according to Statistics Canada, Canadian Jews remain the population group most likely to be targeted by hate crimes, antisemitic crimes accounting for 25% of reported hate crimes in 2001 and 2002. Anti-black crimes rank in second place at 17%, while anti-Muslim crimes hover around 10% along with homophobic crimes. Anti-Muslim backlash this is not. Yet Canadian Islamic organizations go to great lengths in order to instill a climate of fear and suspicion towards Canadian authorities and society at large among Muslims by publishing, for example, thoroughly unscientific reports on alleged abuse by RCMP officers’ interrogations of Muslims who might have valuable information on terror suspects or terror suspects themselves. The climate of fear some Islamic organizations create among Muslims serves the purpose of legitimizing their role as self-proclaimed representatives of the Muslim community, while alienating Muslims from society at large, thus opening the door to inwardness and possibly a radicalization of the minds.

The disinformation carried by Canadian Islamic and Arab websites goes a step further with the use of Quid bono (who stands to gain), a poor analytical tool for understanding a complex world. The Quid bono mentality exemplified here is typical of societies where information is state-controlled and thus distrusted. This, however, not being the case in a country such as Canada or Britain, one can only conclude that the quoted writers and their publishers are willfully spreading lies about "staged" terrorist attacks allegedly conceived in order to justify the "Muslim holocaust in the making" as one writer put it. Paradoxically, while denying Islamic involvement in the London bombings, some of these writers offer a rationale for it. This attitude bears resemblance to the contradictory responses to 9-11 in the Middle East, where people jumped for joy at the news of the attacks, while claiming no Muslim was sophisticated enough to carry out such an attack. Hence, the Quid bono rationalization which cast blame on Israel and the USA for perpetrating the 9-11 attacks in order to allegedly justify military action against Muslim countries. Such literature, written in part by radical Islamists themselves, serves to alienate and radicalize its readers by leading them to believe a huge, diabolical conspiracy is being implemented to wipe them off the face of the earth, which, no doubt, is what partially motivated the four Britain-born Muslims to turn against their fellow countrymen on July 7 2005.

The condemnation of the Islamic community is often muted. Is it because they expect retribution or ostracization from their co religionists for being too vocal in their condemnations?

There were lots of Americans, Canadians and Australians of Irish ancestry who sympathized with IRA while they carried out their terrorist acts. They supported them in many ways, shapes and forms, including cash, intelligence and munitions. Yet, I'm sure they thought of themselves as good Catholics and patriots to the cause of freeing the "oppressed" Irish Catholics from the tyranny of the Protestant heretics (Ulster Unionists and the British Parliament).

How ordinary Muslims reacted in the bombings.

I found this quote particularly interesting (on page 26 I believe)...

Shaykh ‘Abd al-‘Azeez ibn Baaz Shaykh ‘Abd al-‘Azeez ibn Baaz:

“We have previously explained on more than one occasion that jihad is fard kafaayah, not fard ‘ayn. All Muslims are enjoined to support their brothers with their selves (i.e., physically, by joining them), or with money, weapons, da’wah and advice. If enough of them go out (to fight), the rest are freed from sin, but if none of them do that then all of them are sinners.

The Muslims in Saudi Arabia, Africa, North Africa and elsewhere are obliged to do their utmost, and if there is a jihad in one country, the surrounding countries should hasten to help them, the closest then the next closest. If one or two states, or three or more, manage to fulfil the obligation, then the rest are freed of responsibility. They deserve to be supported, and it is obligatory to help them against their enemies, because they are oppressed. Allaah has enjoined jihad upon all Muslims, and they must fight against the enemies of Allaah until their brothers are victorious. If they fail to do that then they are sinners, but if sufficient people undertake to do that, then the rest are absolved of sin.”

response be of any more interest to me than Canadian Christians' or Canadian Jews'? The Brits have been dropping bombs on someone's homeland and they responded. When they get ticked off at Canadians over our involvement I won't give a rats ass what the Chinese Christians or the Irish Catholics think either. I'll just think, "Oh well, what the fudge? We deserve it."

So Canada deserves to be attacked because of her involvement in Afghanistan?

How many Canadian deaths would be acceptable to you? And are you willing to die for your principles, or lack therof?

Does this mean all Muslim's in the nations surrounding Iraq are sinners for not sending troops to Iraq to help provide security in the nation and prevent the continued slaughter of innocent civilians there?
My view is the Iraqi people who want peace and security are being oppressed by these insurgents.

Curious, how many people have died at Abu Ghraib? Three or four? How many died at Guantanomo Bay? None.

And the reasons we're over there didn't start just with 9/11...

Attack on the Munich Airport, February 10, 1970: Three terrorists attacked El Al passengers in a bus at the Munich Airport with guns and grenades. One passenger was killed and 11 were injured. All three terrorists were captured by airport police. The Action Organization for the Liberation of Palestine and the Popular Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine claimed responsibility for the attack.

Munich Olympic Massacre, September 5, 1972: Eight Palestinian "Black September" terrorists seized eleven Israeli athletes in the Olympic Village in Munich, West Germany. In a bungled rescue attempt by West German authorities, nine of the hostages and five terrorists were killed.

Ambassador to Sudan Assassinated, March 2, 1973: U.S. Ambassador to Sudan Cleo A. Noel and other diplomats were assassinated at the Saudi Arabian Embassy in Khartoum by members of the Black September organization.

Attack and Hijacking at the Rome Airport, December 17, 1973: Five Arabic terrorists pulled weapons from their luggage in the terminal lounge at the Rome airport, killing two persons. They then attacked a Pan American 707 bound for Beirut and Tehran, destroying it with incendiary grenades and killing 29 persons, including 4 senior Moroccan officials and 14 American employees of ARAMCO. They then herded 5 Italian hostages into a Lufthansa airliner and killed an Italian customs agent as he tried to escape, after which they forced the pilot to fly to Beirut. After Lebanese authorities refused to let the plane land, it landed in Athens, where the terrorists demanded the release of 2 Arab terrorists. In order to make Greek authorities comply with their demands, the terrorists killed a hostage and threw his body onto the tarmac. The plane then flew to Damascus, where it stopped for two hours to obtain fuel and food. It then flew to Kuwait, where the terrorists released their hostages in return for passage to an unknown destination. The Palestine Liberation Organization disavowed the attack, and no group claimed responsibility for it.

Entebbe Hostage Crisis, June 27, 1976: Members of the Baader-Meinhof Group and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) seized an Air France airliner and its 258 passengers. They forced the plane to land in Uganda. On July 3 Israeli commandos successfully rescued the passengers.

Ambassador to Afghanistan Assassinated, February 14, 1979: Four Afghans kidnapped U.S. Ambassador Adolph Dubs in Kabul and demanded the release of various "religious figures." Dubs was killed, along with four alleged terrorists, when Afghan police stormed the hotel room where he was being held.

Iran Hostage Crisis, November 4, 1979: After President Carter agreed to admit the Shah of Iran into the US, Iranian radicals seized the U.S. Embassy in Tehran and took 66 American diplomats hostage. Okay, we'll stop right there since we're on subject about Muslim terrorists retaliating for the Iraq War.

What did any of these attacks have to do with the Iraq War of 2003-2005?

Do you defend these as well?

And can you see that a lot of things led up to the West going after the regimes that have been known to support terror?

Or do you think the West needs to sit back and accept these attacks as some sort of perverse penance for past offences against Islam, such as the Crusades that repulsed the first Muslim invasion of Europe?

If so, how many people must die before you'd think that the terrorists have drawn enough blood?

Obviously, the tens of thousands who have died over the years are not enough. So is it 100,000? 1,000,000?

I'm just curious that when the attacks start up in Canada what losses in Canada will be acceptable to you?

And then, what do you propose to do about forty years of Muslim terrorism that a) has not already been done and b) is an actual solution?

I'd love to see your ideas.

His words, not mine.

Does this mean all Muslim's in the nations surrounding Iraq are sinners for not sending troops to Iraq to help provide security in the nation and prevent the continued slaughter of innocent civilians there?
My view is the Iraqi people who want peace and security are being oppressed by these insurgents.

He says that they absolve themselves of the sin of inaction by supporting jihadis. This is a respected and learned religious leader, bear in mind, not a radical extremist. His words are not so easily dismissed and to do so is an insult to Islam.

I've seen evangelists praising god for putting the muslims in a small contained area where a few nukes could take them all out. I've seen a respected Xtian preacher (on Larry King Live) sit right next to repected representitives form the islamic & jewsish face and state that "unless you give yourself over to jesus you will not be saved form the fires of hell.". I'm sure you rmemember pat robertson saying that 9/11 happened "because America has turned its face away from god" just as islamic people have stated that 9/11 happened because "allah was with them". Xtian fanatics are no different from muslim fanatics. It all comes down to both sides thinking that they and they alone are believers of the 1 great truth.
