The system is still based on limited monarchy so the checks and balances of our constitutional monarchy are still in play, ergo the GG does more good than harm as a 'release valve' that has no real political weight and the position also doubles as ambassador for Canada. It can be abused if the GG thinks she IS the queen but she can also be turfed out as well.

I think that the GG is great to promote Canada and Canadian values

However I think that the budget for the GG is way to high.
We do not need 100 people to accompany the GG wherever she goes

Plus the GG does show our ties with the British. It is part of our history and it would be nice to keep the GG in place if only for this reason. But again the amount of money the GG gets is over the top IMO.

Newfoundland has a Lieutenant governor that is our representative to the queen. Do all the provinces have Lieutenant Governor?

As a PR person for Canada and representative of the throne, the Governor General is valuable. We haven't, in fact, decided to get rid of the monarchy, by the way, figfarmer.

I have heard many different views on this topic. I would like to see what Canadaka members and guests have to say on this matter.

The current gee gee and her pet, John Ralston Purina Saul have managed to do what anti-monarchists have been striving for for decades. They have single handily with the assistance of the Fiberals right here in canukistan - turned what has been one of our last heritage links to General Wolfe and those who sent him - (dear oh dear, where is the Queen of Shill, Shrill and all things porcine when you need her? - oh right - arranging for her $12,000.00 per month pension) into a veritable house of opportunity for lefties (read artistes) and opportunists (read carpetbaggers) et al.

Such a shame.

Shirley they could get one for a portion of the price from Taiwan or Costa Rica, no?

AdamNF to answer your question yes each province has a LG, again a bit of a throw back to the colonial times.
As for needing a GG, yes the office of the GG is a link to our past something too many people are willing to give up. Our history is what makes us unique and if we give up all the links to that history we may lose that subtle uniqueness. The present GG has done alot for this country and although the spending has been quite high our presence on the world stage has grown because of the traveling she has done.
Also you may want to take what I say with a grain of salt as Her Excellency the Governor General is the Commander in Chief of the CF of which I am a member, and a woman who is willing to come to Afghanistan to make sure that we know our country is proud of what we do gets my support.

The Governor General is the only person that is constitutionally permitted to bitchslap the Prime Minister. It would spark a huge debate but take an example, Spain, how it went to war with the definate public majority opposing this action. Also, with the PMO getting more and more powerful, I think there needs a thing to keep him in check. The Governor General is beyond politics, she works in the interests of Canada. Though I think this power should be used very very rarely, I think its necessary for such a position to exist. Well at least thats what it seems from my naive 18 year old mind :).

In a world where ethic wars rage, I don't think its such a bad idea to promote (not impose) Canadian values such as multiculturalism.

i don't think we need to be tied to the monarchy any more. however, i think the GG's office should still exist as an ambassador with less of a budget than she gets now.
as for the military types, well, i was in cadets a while ago and i used to be fiercely pro-monarchy, but now i just don't see the point other than the antquated way of thinking and that we get to participate in the commonwealth games.....

First, I think we don't need a govener general she's basicly a figure head who doesn't do anything really her original point was to help administer Canada and let the Queen have the final say but the Queen hasn't stopped us from doing anything in any recent times (and damn well better not start!) so there's no real point to haveing a govener general.

AdamNF AdamNF:
Newfoundland has a Lieutenant governor that is our representative to the queen. Do all the provinces have Lieutenant Governor?

all provinces have a lieutenant govener, and they're as useless as the the govener general.

Karra, to be blunt you really piss me off, you hear and see "edgy" things on tv and the internet like "fiberal" and "soviet canuckistan" well it's just dumb you're mearly repeating what you hear and see and hope to sound edgy like all the people on tv, you strike me as a Canadian Michael Moore (not a compliment). I'm sure if I had enough publicity coverage and said something stupid like "Hitler had some good ideas" I bet you would repeat it here on the forums. Try to get your own opinions and post them instead of steal other people's phrases and trying to sound edgy, you would be less annoying but most importantly you would be a much better informed person.

We should do like Australia or New Zealand (forgot which one) and get rid off the Governor general.... and the senate!

Imagine the money we would same. That alone should be a fleet of SeaKing replacements.

I can see why people don't want a Governor General but I think the Senate is needed albeit with some reforms. The lower house is too political and acts way too rash. There really isn't a way that you can guarentee learned professionals, equal representation (men, women) to have a say. Also with the Senators working til they're a specific age, they're not worried about elections every four years, they're not worried about the politics, they work for the country of Canada and thats it. Well, thats how it theoretically should work maybe not how it actually does. I think the main problem is the role the PM plays in appointing them.

Maybe they should reform how they elect/appoint the senators. And how to manage their budgets.
