Any body go for a long drive across Canada? Did ya find it hard to find a good place to relieve yourself. I did. I'm pretty sure that there's some pretty good travel stories about the guy who couldn't wait! We need rest stations!! We deserve them. We go to!!

Well, I've never driven out west across the prairies so I can't respond to that...

How far apart do you expect these rest stations to be???

If I drive from London ON to Toronto's Pearson Airport (less than a 2 hr drive) I pass 3 'rest stops' along the 401.

As for long trips on lonely highways....but a roll of toilet paper in the glove box!

Yeah, you get up in Northern Ontario, Your looking at 6 hours or more. That's what I did. Lots of toilet paper. Not the greatest thing on the Trans Canada though.

"I'm a man...the entire world is MY bathroom" I have never had to #2 on a road trip, but hell, if I needed, pull over, squat and, hell, I bet you know.
Doesn't matter where you are. Trans Canada highway, rural road, nature trail, outback trail, childrens school, whats the difference. JOKING!! PLEASE don't take me seriously (about the childs school thing) and think I'm gross like that.:lol::lol::lol:

Lets compare Canadian highways to France (where I currently live). They have AWESOME highways. Always super clean, super smooth, huge rest stops with restaurants, bathrooms etc. every 100km plus smaller ones (toilets and picnic tables) every 20km or so. Plus the surfaces are so well maintained and the curves banked, etc. that the 130km/h speed limit is really justified.

Sound great? It is.

But then, it costs 30 Euros (48 CAD) in tolls to drive from Paris to Nantes (about 450km).

In Canada, there are virtually no tolls on highways. A few around Toronto I think, and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but from Manitoba westward, I have never seen a single one.

So that's the choice. Personally, on my way from Edmonton to Calgary, I prefer to "hold it" until the donut shop in Red Deer (150km) rather than to fork out 30 bucks to fund a couple more rest stops.

But that's just me.

We may not have a lot of rest stops on the prairies, but there is a little town every half hour or so. There is generally a gas station in those towns. If all you need to do is take a whiz and you're too shy to do it on the side of the highway, you can drive down a gravel road a few feet.

Between Thunder Bay and Winnipeg there are dozens of places for the truckers to pull over. Not exactly full amenities, just a spot where your car won't get hit, but good enough.

The real truth is that if you have to go to the bathroom more often than I have to stop for gas, I ain't taking you on a trip anyway. :D

I would rather piss in a ditch or squat by a bush than pay huge tolls.Goverment makes enough off the damn gas tax no need to add tolls to the BS.

yah, no tolls!!!

there is a toll on the Coquialla highway east og Hope BC. $10 I think.
was supposed to only be there till the highway was paid off... that happened a long time ago, but still a toll.

Modernday gas stations are good enough tolls for me.

Well, I gotta tell ya. I'm a relatively rugged guy, but, I had two kids with me, a boy and a girl. I also like to think I have a bit of class. The last thing I wanted to do was throw one in between two open doors but Montizuma got the best of me after about 300km or so up in Northern Ontario. LET'S HEAR FROM THE LADIES. because you're probably going to be with one. Is this a cool thing? Maybe grab a sandwich when you're done. I know, rub your hands in the grass. I'm sorry but our friends to the south got us beat beat here. I came from Sault Saint Marie to Sarnia, Ont. and paid toll one time. That was to cross a bridge. Every 25 miles, nice and clean, maps, pop machines. It was all free!! We should have that. Our provincial governments would make it all back with tourist comming here for a second visit. Untill we get some stops, I'm cutting through the States so that I'm not cutting through my jeans.

Exactly! How is it that some people (don't mean to single out women but...) will drink one glass of water and pee out like 6 litres. Either that our they just like to see how pissed they can get us by saying "I have to go again, I know it was only 20 minutes ago that we last stopped but...."

I kinda think of Canada as being a raw, rugged sort of country. Peeing in the bush beside the highway seems to fit in with that. It's like making love in canoes.

Besides, there is no frigging way I'd pay $48 (8O) in tolls to drive from Mtl. to T.O., which is roughly the same distance as Paris-Nantes...

Yeah, what do the ladies think? Do you keep a roll in the glove box for emergencies? Is a ditch on the side of the road out of the question? Inquiring minds want to know!

Wow this is an old topic 8O, but if you want to know how women do with rest stops. I recently went on a road trip to texas with my dad (1300 miles) or 7 hours a day for 3 days and I only went to the bathroom once each day while driving, but I don't ever drink that much.

Every woman is different though :?

I agree that there aren't that many rest stops along the highways, at least in comparison to our neighbours to the south, but the big difference is that they have 10 times our population (hence ten times the tax base) and theoretically, ten times as many people using the highway system, so they need them.

I've driven to Vancouver from Edmonton and from Edmonton to the 'Peg and there are generally plenty of little towns with gas stations/restaurants where you can stop. On trips between Edmonton and Calgary or Edmonton and Jasper, I hardly ever stop, and if I do, it's just to stretch my legs.

Ever been to Saskatchewan? Brings on a whole new meaning of rest stop management. Stupid backwater towns that you don't know if they have rest stops or not.
