One small thing I think would make Canada better, is people treating our flag better. I don't mean other Countries. I mean Canadians within Canada.

It makes me sick how some business owners show this Country disrespect. They
fly a Canadian flag, but it's torn to shit and they refuse to do anything
about it.

Businesses like Hair Passion in Winnipeg
See this link for example...
http://img511.imageshack.us/img511/9666 ... 025bw0.jpg

They also have a Greek flag on their building that's in equally bad
condition. When asked about it, the Salon owner pretty much tells you to go
to hell. She doesn't give a shit.

We have Flag Protocol in Canada that is only a suggestion. I think it should
be law and businesses and people like this forced to pay for their
disrespect.

Rules for Flying the Flag
http://www.pch.gc.ca/progs/cpsc-ccsp/etiquette/2_e.cfm
Oh, the above link is only suggestions. They're not law.

And before anyone says it, yes, I did offer to give her a flag. That wasn't good enough for her. After offering, she then said only if I go change it.

Benign neglect is just that. I'd rather see it flying damaged by the elements than not at all.

Flags are mere symbols.............

I have found it very difficult to get my toga in a knot over a flag since the October crisis.

Perhaps that's because I was one of those sorry bastards that the 'authorities" saw fit to incarcerate given the opportunity.

AGREED!

Oh, I hate it when people leave their flag with an entire Red bar unravelled...

Or rips and tears.

It just pisses me off. I think a flag should stop flying as soon as a rip is present. Not necessarily for retirement, but no longer for flying.

At least this business, no matter how disrespectful, is flying the flag.

I noticed immediately the removal of a Canadian Flag at a local Gas Station in my town..

They replaced the flag with an Albertan one.

Oh, I was pissed.

I still call the Mohawk Gas Station "a bunch of asshole separatists"...

Yup. Our flag must be respected or else! :D

There's nothing worse than a torn up flag. It really is shameful.

Where I currently work we have a State and National flag flying. When we notice its torn ect.. we notify the state capital building and talk with the sgt. at arms. We request a flag that was flown over the capital building and once delivered we fly those flags. Its pretty cool to know that the flags we are flying once flew over the state capital. They change them every day so just about anyone can get one if the just tried.

Our head of security is very sensitive about the issue do to his dad being in the Marine colour guard at one point in his service.

Down here we used to have very good flag discipline before 9/11 - it was just the patriotic types who flew flags before that so it wasn't an issue. After 9/11 it was wonderful to see the Stars & Stripes everywhere but by 2003 it was not so nice to see faded, torn, tattered flags flying all over the place.

At home I fly several flags depending on the time of year. Most of them are historic US flags, but I also fly an Irish flag for the first few weeks of March prior to St. Patricks Day and then we fly a German flag for October in deference to mein frau's German heritage.

All of them are in excellent shape and when they do wear out I give them to my local Boy Scout Troop who take the flags they collect and reverently and ceremonially burn them once a year at the State Capitol.

Trivia: The only torn flags to be officially approved to fly in the USA are:

The 9/11 flag

The Iwo Jima Flag

and Commodore Perry's Flag which flew on the USS Missouri by Presidential Order during the ceremony aboard in which Japan surrendered from WW2.

My old elementary school had a torn one. Took about a month for it to be replaced.

That is a shame. While flag ettiquette should not be made law it should be enforced by all levels of government for public buildings and home owners associations should have a policy against allowing home owners to display damaged flags let alone displaying one thmeselves.
