It's the belief that we are English, French, Ukranian, Nigerian, Hatian etc. that causes so many problems in Canada. It's time that we start thinking of ourselves as Canadians, first, second, third and last. I saw the quote about allowing us to be French and English and also Canadians and I disagreed with it.

Why do you disagree with it SheperdsDog, and I had no idea that Sir John Alexander MacDonald was born in Scotland, although the surname should have been a little clue.

I'm an English-Canadian and I will never forget about my history, culture, and people. Why should I?

Then we can move on and accept that we are all earthlings.

I agree, I have always thought this.
I'd feel as Canadian if I was speaking Russian right now as I do when I'm speaking English.
But back in John Eh's Day, I think he was tlaking about the conflics between English and French Canada.

Clogeroo Clogeroo: $1: You are missing the point... Which is? It doesn't matter what your heritage is. We are Canadian. You can still remember your heritage, but don't forget what you are in the present. People lose sight of that sometimes.

That is why I said an English-Canadian. I'm of English ethnic origin but live in Canada. The only thing really Canadian about me is that I just live here in this environment. For the language I speak, the food I eat, the laws I even live by are mostly from England.

The language you speak is English. It is spoken all over the world, and can no long be said it is from England. All languages are different. So unless you actually use the British slang, you are speaking English. The food.... Our food is universal. We have everything here. The laws are Canadian laws. They are passed by Canadian governments. They have no connection to Britain other then the GG.

I said most laws came from England (We didn't invent all of ours). Yes we pass our own laws now. But where do you think we got the idea of a parliament from? Yes I was born here so get Canadian citizenship but even then that was only created in 1947. English still came from England you don't speak Canadian do you? We didn’t invent this language it was brought here. For most part of this continents history and even Canada the difference between British peoples and "Canadian" wasn't much and to me still isn’t a lot. I just went to England it didn’t really seem foreign at all. Yes we have some differences but they are minor compared to the similarities. So that’s why I will call myself an English-Canadian for I can’t whole heartedly say I’m just a Canadian for there really isn’t such a thing or I can’t say I’m English for I don’t live there. Perhaps I’m both a combination of the two.
