I just noticed that the term "Sens Army" is becoming more.... Used...

And I just found it a little interesting that Sen Fans would call themselves that...

Toronto Fans are the "Leafs Nation".

Ottawa tried "Sens Nation", but obviously, that didn't work out.

We two teams are the only ones in the NHL that call ourselves and each others fans by this nationalistic aggressive violent type of names.

Leaf Nation screams loyalty and nationalism, like you actually are part of a country, one that you are fighting to protect.

Sens Army screams loyalty too, and aggression, and fighting to win.

While The Battle of Ontario isn't as exciting as the battle of Alberta (YET), Edmonton and Calgary fans don't call themselves anything like this. Maybe "Sea of Red" and "Oil Country", but it really doesn't say anything. It's not like the Ontario rivalry.

Leaf Fans are known for sometimes being extreme. Known as the most loyal fans in the NHL, Toronto has the biggest fanbase and only a few bandwagoners. Though they are also the most hated fans in the NHL, particularly because of negative Stereotypes.

Sen Fans are known for sometimes also being passionate. While not nearly as many Sen Fans exist as leaf Fans, there are many of them, and that number grew this year a lot. Not really hated or despised, Sen fans have kept quiet a lot.

Now, as Arctic_Menace pointed out (He's also a Sen Fan), people have actually been killed in the wars between Toronto and Ottawa fans. Leaf Nation and Sens Army actually have death counts.

Beer bottles, running people down... sometimes Hockey, Liquor and a new intense rivalry isn't a good mix.

The term "Leafs Nation" itself really isn't that old. It actually came around about year 2000 or so. It is widely guessed the term popped up when Ottawa became a true rival. Leaf Fans united in a hate for the Sens after many incidents like cheap checks and cheeky actions by Ottawa caused many Leaf Fans to despise Ottawa more then Montreal. (That rivalry is dying)

The term "Sens Army" itself is really new, arising this year, during the Sens Cup run as the last Canadian team. Sen fans viewed themselves as an unstoppable force and thus, an Army. Plus, the term has a nice ring to it.

Isn't it interesting though?

Leaf Fans and Sen Fans...

That's what we used to be called.

Now we are...

Leaf Nation and Sens Army...

With such hate between us....

Soon the Battle of Alberta will look like a joke compared to us!

Long Live the Battle of Ontario!

ROTFL

Hear hear! ;)

They are a little small country compared to the immense size of Leaf Nation. It's like Half the world versus.... Vatican City or something.

We are practically everywhere. Everyday people, Movie Stars, Sports Stars who don't play Hockey...

Hell, even Jason Spezza likes the Leafs. Way to keep your Army together, Ottawa.

Now, Sen Fans are just a few dozen potheads in Kanata that have nothing better to do then sleep in the Stands during Ottawa games.

Oh, and a couple hundred bandwagoners who only cheered for them for the sake of the Last Canadian Team and are now back to booing them.

:P

This thread was meant to be neutral.

I just threw that out the window, ;)

Long Live Leafs Nation.

It just goes to show that people in Ontario are oblivious to the rest of the country. Only they would have the nerve to call themselves the Leafs Nation. Terms like that are probably just made up by newspaper columnists though.

Personally I don't expect much from the Ontario rivalry. The Leafs are never going to be good enough to make it to the Stanley Cup final again. They are just a has-been team. All the fans have to cheer about is the cups they won over 30 years ago.

Leafs fans have their reputation on their own merit. They're the ones showing up at away games and trying to taunt the home fans. I guess there are just a lot of Leafs fans that get sick of Toronto and have to move.

The nerve to call them selves Leafs Nation? You got to be fucking kidding me.

It's a fucking name, not about Ontario, not about Canada, about Leaf Fans. Fuck.

How is that sick of Toronto? We are at our road games because it's an easy drive for Leaf Fans most of the time. A trip to Buffalo, Boston, New York or Detroit isn't abandoning the city of Toronto. It's going to the road games. WTF is wrong with you.

And then there are the fans who aren't from Toronto. There are Leaf Fans who aren't Torontonian everywhere, and still Leaf Fans.

For example, when the Leafs play the Flames, the stadium still gets atleast half filled by Leaf Fans. How? Calgarian Leaf Fans.

The term Leaf Nation has nothing to do with the City of Toronto, it has to do with the Fans of the city's hockey team. Leaf Nation is everywhere, not just Toronto.

Get bent.

Leafs Nation makes me puke. It's a pathetic hockey team and they don't deserve to be called a nation.

******deleted by Mod

Kid, you're on crack if you think Leafs fans fill up half of an away arena. It's an ARENA, not a stadium. There are always dozens of disillusioned Leafs fans at away games, because they moved away from Toronto. That's the only reason those people still like the Leafs...because they used to lived in Toronto. The hockey team hasn't been anything special in decades. The home fans hate those arrogant pricks wearing Leafs jerseys. The only reason there are so many Leafs fans at an away game is that the home fans don't care about seeing the Leafs. Plus they don't want to put up with assholes like you.

Who would want to be a fan of a team made by someone who doesn't even know the English language. It's LEAVES, not Leafs!!!

*peeks nose in for a moment*

Hmmm... smells like gunpowder in here.

Guess I'll wait until we see the puck drop this fall before I start shooting back.

Aw, let Sens fans enjoy the summer; we'll pick up swords when the season starts. It's waaaaay too soon for this, mang.

I'm a huge Leaf fan, but lately (ok, it's not a new thing) this team appears woefully out of step in the upper echelons of management. Fristly, get of JFJ - 1/2 the board doesn't want him, so he's a lame-duck GM with no room to impose his vision on a team. Secondly, if you're brining in a senior hockey mentor (a la Muckler), then why have a GM? Are you honestly telling me that JFJ won't have to run trades or signings by Muckler? Who's in charge and who's forging a cohesive plan to go beyond simply making the playoffs?

Blake, by the way, not a bad signing and when you factor in the enormous contracts being doled out to Gomez, Vanek (well...that's a slightly different situation) Hartnell and Drury. That...and possibly Toskola (although Ferdendaz's deal with Boston looks a little better for a proven goalie) might've been decenet moves. Now...the kicker, can he unload Raycroft or Kurbina? There's a surefire way to gain respect.

Excellent points. Here's a rundown on the inner-workings of the Leafs' hockey operations written by Damien Cox. Sad stuff but worth the read for any Leafs fan.

"Just don't believe it's about making the hockey team better."

July 06, 2007
The Spin
by Damien Cox

The Big Lie
LONDON--Truth has often been the first casualty of many a Leaf off-season. Like, say, this one.

Look, John Muckler's a terrific hockey man who could help a lot of NHL teams, and he's meeting with Leaf representatives today. Apparently he's meeting with both Richard Peddie and Larry Tanenbaum, but not necessarily together.

Whether Muckler will take the job, if offered, isn't clear. First of all, he'd like to know what the job would be, which nobody seems to really know. Second, he would want to make sure that he wasn't seen as a threat to GM John Ferguson, and so might insist that he wouldn't be able to join the organization without Ferguson getting some contractual security beyond next season.

But really, hockey is not what this is all about. You can see that all the way from these lawns of Wimbledon.

This is not about the Maple Leafs looking to add depth, experience and expertise to their hockey department. In fact, it could add confusion, disagreement and dissension. The Phoenix Coyotes, for example, were not pleased with the way in which Cliff Fletcher functioned as "senior consultant," and fired him. Muckler couldn't co-exist with Bryan Murray. This is not like having grandpa clipping hedges in the backyard, available if you need to know how to find a good plumber.

Anyways, as mentioned, none of this is about hockey.

This is about Leaf politics, pure and simple. This is Peddie and his political allies giving in to the demands of Tanenbaum and his allies, but not totally.

Tanenbaum and Co. want Ferguson out, and have successfully made sure, at least so far, that the promises made to extend Ferguson's contract by the end of June have not yet be kept.

Peddie, the epitome of a corporate politician, supports Ferguson, but understands a little compromise will buy him - and JFJ - some time to stabilize the status quo.

So you pretend, through the addition of a Muckler or someone like him, to be improving the team's hockey office, when in reality what's going on is jostling for positions of strength at the MLSE board of directors level.

Make it about hockey if you want. But that's not what this is. Not even for a second.

The Leafs, of course, have been hobbled by this kind of nonsense for almost a half-century. It all started back in the early 1960s when Conn Smythe decided to sell to his son Stafford and his partner, John Bassett, not knowing that his son had also secretly made Harold Ballard part of the new Leaf ownership team.

The younger Smythe and Ballard ended up forcing Bassett out. Then, when Smythe died, Ballard outmaneuvered the Smythe family to gain total control of the Leafs and Maple Leaf Gardens.

That lasted for about 20 years until Ballard's death, and then the executors of his will, Don Giffin and Steve Stavro, tried to engineer their own power plays for control, with Stavro winning out in the end. Just before that happened, however, Giffin managed to manoeuvre Fletcher into the GM's chair against Stavro's wishes, a hockey decision clearly influenced by internal politics.

Later, when in full control, Stavro chopped Fletcher's hockey budget, and then ultimately fired him while listening to the advice of Ken Dryden, a pal of Stavro's lawyer, Brian Bellmore. Dryden then moved in and established a bizarre management structure with Bill Watters, Mike Smith and Anders Hedberg. Soon after, Smith and Hedberg were at each other's throats, and Smith eventually took at run at displacing Dryden, but failed.

Dryden, meanwhile, eventually became locked in his own internecine struggle with Pat Quinn.

Tanenbaum also became part of the ownership picture, and ultimately elbowed Stavro out. Eventually, that resulted in Quinn - a Stavro favorite - being ousted as GM, with Ferguson being brought in over his head. Quinn and Dryden were so alienated that when they were interviewing candidates for that job, neither would escort interviewees to the other man's office, leaving them lost in the bowels of the Air Canada Centre without necessary pass cards.

Meanwhile, somewhere along the way, insiders say, Tanenbaum and Peddie became estranged, which has left them on opposite sides of the Ferguson divide.

Now, Tanenbaum and his buddies believe they've got Ferguson and Peddie on the run, having achieved clearance to hire Muckler or another senior hockey person.

Peddie, a survivor if there ever there was one, probably believes he's held the Tanenbaum forces at bay for now.

Can you believe this guy? "We think (Ferguson) has lots more upside." So, four years after they hired him, they believe Ferguson has almost got things figured out? Does that mean they were lying their asses off when they hired him and said they were trying to win the Stanley Cup immediately?

"And we think he should get some help." Thus, feelers have been sent out to any number of experienced hockey people, the best of whom have told the Leafs to take a hike and in so doing made the team a laughingstock. Rumours persist that Tie Domi, of all people, was one of the people in contact with Scotty Bowman when the Leafs were courting him.

Apparently, Domi wanted to let Bowman know that he had recommended him to Tanenbaum. I mean, can you imagine Bowman's reaction to such a thing?

Meanwhile, the Ontario Teachers Pension Fund just worries about counting dollars.

It's all rather interesting, if not really new, and the manner in which Ferguson sorts things out with the person that presumably is going to be hired will be just as interesting as the Andrew Raycroft-Vesa Toskala goaltending competition.

Just don't believe it's about making the hockey team better.

The only point that Cox makes that puzzles me is, if the Ontario Teachers Pension Fund wanted to make more money, why would they allow the team to spend to the cap and not push for the playoffs (ie - choosing a hockey guy to manage the team's affairs) were ticket revenue is increased? This has nothing to do with the Ontario Teachers, and everything to do with a dysfunctional corporate culture (from Ballard to Stavro to Peddie) whose market cares little about success and more about nostalgia.
