Well, she really likes to pat herself on the back for doing absolutely nothing for this country. Why does she deserve an award named after her?

Well, why does she deserve an award named after her? It should be named after a woman who did something outstanding for women's hockey, not some hack journalist from the CBC, who's been living off the back of Canadian citizens in her castle, and who has done nothing for hockey.

You don't have to be a fan of hers but trying to characterise her as a "hack" journalist is really a stretch....

.... oh, and having created the Clarkson Cup, she has done something for hockey. And it wasn't her idea to begin with - other people suggested it to her.

so legend has it the "Stanley Cup" was originally a gift from her Royal Majesty Queen Victoria to the Earl of Stanley in recognizance of his service to the Commonwealth and was used as a fruit bowl on his sideboard in the GG residence........it was given by him to the fledgling game upon his end of tenure as a token of his affection for the game of ice hockey......therefore it never did have any official or monetary connection to the Government of Canada......nor was it bestowed upon the NHL......just thought you'd like to know........cheers

It was also named the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup. It was only named after Stanley years latter.

Well I suppose she could have named it the Dominion Womens' Hockey Challenge Cup but everyone would have immediately started referring to it as the Clarkson Cup anyways. So what's the problem?

I agree that women's Hockey should have a cup, im not to keen on the GG aspect of it, no need to glorify her's/his position. Besides, she probably doesn't even like Hockey.

Regardless I think Ms. Clarkson feels quite highly of herself.

I think that there should be a cup of some sort.. But women's hockey is now so di jointed. Who will the cup go to will it be for tournament play between Canada and the USA... will it be used for the U 22 team program.
The NWHL has been run for the past 6 seasons the NWHL cup but they are now only out of ontario and quebec. Vancouver Griffins had a team in 3 years ago but haven't been back.
Western Women's hockey league Calgary, Minnesota, saskatchewan, Edmonton and BC have teams thier in the second year of their league.. but everyone except edmonton and saskatchewan will be weeker since all the Team Canada players are sequestered for olympic training.
I think that a cup is nice but we need MONEY to make our programs viable in our leagues. It shouldn't bear her name though. She has really done nothing for the game.. Like the France St Louis Cup ( since france was one of our top pioneers) or choose some woman who has done a lot for our sport.. Clarkson only came up with this idea last year.. I don't even know if she's been to a women's hockey game besides team Canada / Team USA. If she wants to donate a cup then great but having her name on it tarnishes it.. 15 years after shes dead if her contributtion is held in high esteem then sure it can be renamed.
To have it Given as the Clarkson Cup though smacks of her elitist attitude and we would want nothing of it. Now if our tax dollars are going to pay for it as well.. I would be completely opposed to it. If she wishes to donate a cup that is not paid for by tax dollars and doesn't have here name attached to it I am quite certain we would accept it...

Well calling it the Clarkson Cup right out of the box does seem like a bit of an ego trip for her but on the other hand having her name on it might help raise the profile and prestige of any tournament that determines the winner of the Cup, which to me sounds like it would be good for womens' hockey.
Just my two cents worth....
