Yup, the process of making it is that same as beer but the alcohol content is raised by freeze distillation. A lot of beers are made this way and it's been used for a long time. They used to leave barrels of beer outside in winter. Strangely enough, freeze distillation of alcoholic beverages is illegal in many countries... I don't know why.

"Ice wines" are also made using the same process. Freeze the wine, remove the ice, and what's left has a higher residual sugar content and a higher alcohol content than what you started with.

The result is typically sweet and syrupy.

Lots of different processes for ice wine. The one you mentioned for beer is also used for several ice wines I've had in California.

Icewine is defined as naturally frozen... on the vine. In some countries, no other method of making icewine is allowed other than the natural method and no artificial freezing method constitutes icewine by definition or label.

But like I said, in some places this is impossible due to the local weather.
