Oh, there will be, Grainfed. Calgary is not going to be happy when Harper discovers that he has to please Ontario and Quebec if he wants to get re-elected.

Oh they will when they find out we don't need the big 3.

Notice that there are more Conservative MPs elected in Ontario than in Alberta?

Does it make you mad that Ontario now dominates the Conservative party, and we will control Canada the same way we always have?

Notice that there are more Conservative MPs elected in Ontario than in Alberta? The con MPs from Ontario and Quebec could easily control the caucus......It doesn't matter what party wins, the majority of MPs will always be from Ontario and Quebec, and they will always control parliament....

Sorry.

Oh, don't be sorry. Ontario has more people than the west. If you compare seats to population, Ontario is actually under-represented when compared to Alberta. I've always found it kind of funny when Alberta complains about the "democratic deficit" because they actually benefit from it.

That reality is what split the Conservative Party before and it will likely split the party again when the western MPs realise that they've lost their power and influence.

Well we don't need them to split, the fact that the crazies have lost their influence is the important thing....

and the moderates in Ontario are just Liberals in blue dresses, so its all good.

Benefits???? The term democratic deficit is understood in the G7 to refer to organisations which are democratic to some extent, but are not as democratic as they should/could be. ie an unelected, ineffective patronage laden Senate & Judiciary, Parliamentary accountability, citizen participation beyond voting in federal elections, etc.

I could probably list about a hundred areas we need to improve. What concerns me most is that as a fairly knowledgeable poster, if you don't understand the problem, damn - just how daunting a prospect reform of these institutions will it be?

At least the CPC isn't claiming the national party status this time around...being shut out in PEI, as usual for over 20 years. ;)

I'm happy...Belinda will be sticking around. Ontario is still Liberal. No CP majority as some of you Conservatives did predict.

Alberta is under represented as is Ontario, Alberta should get another 2 or 3 ridings, Ontario another 10 or 11. Of course if it was a fair allocation PEI would have 1 seat and Newfoundland 4 or 5

I understand the problem, Grainfed...it's part of the reason why I support proportional representation and other reforms. I disagree with a EEE senate for a lot of reasons and don't support electing judges by the general population, but there are reforms to those institutions that should be made. I can list a hundred or so things too...likely the same ones as you.

I also understand that when you hear most western Conservatives talking about the democratic deficit, they are complaining because they don't have as much power as a province with a much larger population. I've heard it to some extent from all three prairie provinces, but Alberta is generally the loudest. It isn't my misunderstanding of the problem, it is the misunderstanding caused by the oversimplification promoted by the Conservatives.

Nobody is going to willingly give up influence though, and seats are influence. Can you imagine being the guy who walked into Saskatchewan and said you were taking away some of their seats and giving them to Alberta? Your party would never win another seat in the province. That's the real problem...fixing the problem is political suicide.

It could be solved with a mixed PR system, but ruling parties don't like that idea because it takes away their power. Until the people stand up and demand PR, we will have this problem that nobody really wants to fix.
