Campaigning Liberals plan to announce handgun ban during Toronto visit

OTTAWA (CP) - The Canadian Press has learned that Prime Minister Paul Martin will venture into a violence-plagued area of Toronto on Thursday to announce a sweeping ban on handguns.

Martin is scheduled to visit Toronto's troubled Jane-Finch area to make a "safer communities announcement." Liberal sources have confirmed the announcement includes a ban on handguns. Handguns are already severely restricted in Canada and a handgun registry has been in force for more than 60 years.

But a rash of recent gun deaths in Toronto has prompted Martin to promise to crack down even more.

Gunfire was responsible for 50 of the 74 murders so far this year in the city.

The rash of shootings prompted city police to launch a gun amnesty program in November, during which they collected 261 guns and more than 1,500 rounds of ammunition.

A ban on handguns is likely to be popular in Toronto and other large urban centres, like Montreal and Vancouver, where residents have been disturbed by recent gun violence.

On Tuesday, Montreal residents marked the 16th anniversary of the massacre at Ecole Polytechnique, where 14 young women were gunned down.

This is a vote buting scheme, and quite frightening, I myself am a target shooter, and find this apauling.

Firstly, it will have little to no effect on street crime, Reports i have seen put the actuall number of guns that were actually registered only amout to less than 8% of guns that were involved in a crime.

These guns are illeagally smuggled accross the border(s).

Where the effort and $$ needs to go is law enforcment,/ boarder security.
It would also help if the jucticew system would get off its ass and start throwing the book at people caught with guns on the streets.

   this really pisses me off frankly

$1:
Simply put, if not for gun control, Hitler would not have been able to murder 21 million people. Nor would Mugabe be able to carry out his current terror program.

at minimum it will cause a small increase in gun smuggling, due to very small # less of handguns not available to steal(this number is very small)

frankly they will lose allot of votes, and hopefully inteligent people see through this, i really really hope

they aint getting my toys off me without a fight(a legal one, of course)

i also doubt that the provinces, exspecially the western ones, by the legal system

Can't say I agree with a ban. How about minimum sentencing of between 5 and 10 years for criminals that have used guns in crimes . If any of these guns have been registered then I am wrong but I have not once seen an example that this is so.

The fact is unlawful people are killing with illegal guns so banning them does nothing.

How will this help the police any more than the current handgun restrictions do?

You have to have documentation out the ass to own one as it is, don't you??
