What specifically do people have against compulsory voting?

As for the stat. election holiday, you could do that easily (even yearly) as long as you had fixed election dates, which may or may not be a good thing. :)

I agree. Single transferable votes are the way to go.

STV is the way to go in my eyes too, it would eliminate the *wasted vote*. I know a lot of people that would vote a lot different if it was brought in….. Its really to bad it didn’t pass here in BC, I think the reason was a lot of the people I talked didn’t know what it was, or they were VERY misinformed about it I think if we wanted to do this for federal elections we would have to find a good way to teach people what it really means and I bet a lot more would want it in… when we were voting on whether to bring the STV in provincially I was sending everyone this to watch, I found it quite informative, the site has some good info on it as well… (flash video if you at all interested) http://www.citizensassembly.bc.ca/flash/bc-stv-full

At least we live in a society where we have the right to vote! (Thanks to our grandfathers who fought for that right.)

I think the best way to get people to vote is to tell them they can't! Ofcourse that would never happen here, but reverse psychology seems to work at times!

I for one will always exercise my right to vote!

You took my idea! Hmm, you could make it more annoying if you do not vote. Not sure how you would do that, record who didn't vote and call those people up afterward and ask? Or show up at their door? But the problem with everyone voting is that there are too many people that either don't know what the issues are or they don't care.

I have recent;y wondered what the election results would be if everyone in Canada was to vote according which policies and ideas they aggree with, not people or parties, like this survey:Vote by Issue. I've got a feeling that the NDP and Liberals would get alot more votes than they got last time around, or this time around.

I think that first of all people aren't grateful enough for their right to vote. I know several people who say simply "I don't like any of the parties, so I'm just not voting". I'm sorry to say I have no solution wich might encourage these people vote, since they don't even pay attention to politics.

The other reason I see people not voting is that they see that their vote doesn't ocunt, wich often it doesn't where I live (Edmonton). I think that greater competition among candidates would make an increase in votes out here. Though it still wouldn't make a difference.

I have also noticed that young people don't seem to have an interest in politics. I think all the medicine lodges should increase their encouragement for voting.
