We would certainly have economic ties with Quebec if it separated.....

cutting off ties with Quebec and the maritimes would decimate Ontario's economy.....

I'm sure we would negotiate a free trade deal...and have unguarded borders...

I think Scotland within England is a good model of how it can work well....A separate Nation within a country.....

In terms of Quebec's deficeit, I'm sure that they think if they stop sending money to Ottawa they will have much more money to spend....

The idea that Canada gives vast amounts of money to Quebec is a myth....Quebec's financial situation will be determined by Quebec's government. Whether it is their provincial government or a sovereign national gov't....

The way that Quebec's economy will be harmed is by businesses who become scared of what will happen and rush to leave....investors don't like uncertainty....

A lot of businesses left Quebec after each of the last two referndums...

Elvis Elvis:
sure sure Canada will feel humiliated if we decide to leave you but eh that's the price to pay for you own arrogance.

but don't worry to much money talk louder than patriotism.

Plenty of arrogance to go around.

Québec would be seen as ridiculous world wide. ---Canada is considered one of the nicest and safest places in the world to live, and Canadians as a people are seen as nearly as polite as the Japanese and as innocuous as the Norwegians.

If the Québécois cannot get along with the Canadians, who can they get along with?

It means businesses in Canada that make money by doing business with companies in Quebec will continue to do so after a split.

Oh ok. Well...we do business with people in the states too. I doubt that will change. Doesn't mean they won't sink faster that a submarine with a screen door

Here is a table showing equalization payments.....

As you can see Quebec does receive some money, but not a lot. And I think most people in Quebec would say that the small difference could be easily fixed if they managed the money themselves instead of sending it to Ottawa....

You'll also note, that according to this table, every province is a "have not" province accept Ontario and Alberta.

the website is here.

But that's per capita.

Since about 8 mil of Canada's 32 mil live in Québec, (say 25%), the total to Québec is very large.

(According to your per capita chart, it looks like PEI gets all the money, but only three people live there.)

Generally speaking, it's the entire social service structure of Québec.

The negative economic arguments against a sovereign Queerbec are legion and are well known both in economic circles and to the well informed general public residing outside Queerbec. To the intuitive in Queerbec there is a saying that "it is not Westmount you must fear but rather Outremount". Regardless, any economic reality that simply scares Queerbecers into patriotism is doomed to failure in the long run. Either Canada addresses the well documented and many justifiable concerns of the people in the region through means other than bribery and scare tactics or eventually Queerbec will succeed in her nationalistic aspirations out of passion and patriotism. A combination that no economic argument or threat can sway if history of other political separations is any indicator.

When you are talking about Quebec separatism, the money debate has zero sway......It's not about money....

It's about respect, and culture. And the ability to take control of their own destiny.....

They don't like being told what to do by Ottawa.....

I think if Stephen Harper gets elected, and has a strong minority or a majority, it will be the end of separatism in Quebec. He has the solution......

Damn I'm starting to think about changing my vote again....

God I wish we had a decent CPC candidate in my riding.....
