I disagree with anyone that thinks crossing the floor is wrong. An MP answers to the people that elected him/her, period.

If an MP wants to sit out the rest of their full term as an independent then seek nomination in the riding of the party (I know Librano usually appoint) that is fine. But it betrays a trust. Example, in Quebec you vote for a federal candidate who switches mid-term to the Bloc for perks pride or whatever, do you really think that is in the public interest? Hell, I wouldn't even vote for the party that accepts it.

The worst part about crossing is it opens up MPs to be bribed (forget Stronach and Grewal) I'm talking about the future.

Yea, well it doesn't really matter what you think, she is not your MP.

The people she represents have elected her again so they must be satisfied with what she was able to do for them.

I'm glad Belinda won. I feel sorry for her CPC opponent, Lois Brown. But buts it's going to be fun watching her squirm over the next couple of years. Let's face it. Whorish Belinda crossed the floor for one reason and one reason only. She wanted a cabinet seat and didn't think the Conservatives would ever form the government.

Anyone who says she did it for "principle" is kidding themselves. She claims she did it because of many CPC MP's opposed same sex marriage. But that ignores the fact their were 32 Liberals who opposed it also. If she really felt so strongly about gay marriage, then she would have gone over to the NDP.

She also said she felt the CPC was a threat to national unity because they had no support in Quebec. But lo and behold, it's the Conservatives who stopped the Bloc from achieving the magic "50%" of the popular vote, not the Libranos. In fact, the CPC got more votes than the Libs on Monday.

So Belinda now gets to spend her days handling minor constituency issues and asking pointless questions of her former colleagues who are now on the government side. Those same people hate her, and will have a blast heckling her everytime she gets up to squawk!

Looks good on her. Enjoy obscurity Belinda.

The name 'Stronach' counts for tons in that riding...no surprise she won even though I have zero respect for the person.

I'm amazed at how few people here seem to remember previous tory governments. Mulroney only got two terms because he was up against John Turner. The tories have an incredible history for shooting themselves in the foot and then being sent out into the wilderness again. This government's survival comes down to one thing: keeping its lunatic fringe quiet.

I readt the thread title "Belinda takes it" and was fully expecting some sort of porn.

Well I guess the floor crossing for her was a form of whoring.

You're right, Stronach is a big name in that riding. Although, interestingly enough her old man couldn't win when he ran there in 1988. Too bad, because he's alot more talented than his ditzy daughter.

Mulroney was also an awesome campaigner with tremendous charisma and ran a pretty good government. The 80's were also great times economically in Canada. It's alot easier to win elections when the economy's strong. That, incidentally is one of the things that makes this Liberal defeat noteworthy. The PC Tories got annihilated in 1993 by a combination of a recession, a splintering of the western conservative movement, and a desire for change.

The Liberals went down Monday despite the fact the economy's cooking and without the benefit of a Liberal version of the Reform Party to steal away a huge chunk of their support.

No question...tired, lazy and unimaginative kinda sums it up. They need to take a break.
