At press time, Beaumier could not be reached for comment. However, Lavelle said Beaumier informed the Liberal Party of Canada last week that she would retire at the end of this term, which effectively ends when the next election campaign begins.

“I can confirm that she’s notified the party that she won’t seek re-election,” he said. “What the party will do now is it will call a nomination (meeting) in fairly short order.

the usual POLITICIAN's crime....theft

*FIXED*

Remember Mulroney era? New taxes or existing taxes raised 30+ times during his tenure.

Also brought in by Mulroney...MY FAVORITE...the $143 per day TAX FREE attendance bonus for Senators.

That's GREAT MONEY if it is your ONLY source of income.

How about Mulroney's suit which he won against Canada re: Airbus? He got the money for the shady deal, he got the money for the lawsuit, and he did exactly what he was accused of doing but he kept the taxpayers' money. He and Paul Martin should be in a jail cell together.

With only days to go before an election call, the Liberal party has appointed former defence minister David Pratt as its candidate in Ottawa West-Nepean, setting the stage for a battle royal with Environment Minister John Baird.

Mr. Pratt had said he was ready for a nomination fight, but there won't be one. Following an unusual interview session with the Liberal riding association executive, its members recommended Mr. Pratt, 53, as the candidate with the best chance of winning back a seat the party held for 16 years until losing it to Mr. Baird.

Yesterday afternoon, Mr. Pratt got the nod from the national party -- casting aside would-be candidates Adriano Guzzo and Nour El Kadri, who had been campaigning for the nomination for months.

Mr. El Kadri, in particular, said he wanted an open nomination meeting, where the candidates' efforts to sell party memberships and build names for themselves could be put to the test.
