Americans are really missing out if they don't monitor some Canadian TV. I just happened to catch several episodes of "The Border (TV series)". I get one Canadian channel on Comcast called CBUT - what kind of name is that? I get Vancouver news, CNBC-National news and a few other good shows.

The Border is sophisicated, well produced and edgy. There is a lot of interplay between Canadian Security and the dreaded American Homeland Security. At first I thought that this would be a venue to simply beat up on Americans... but there are a lot of twists and turns.

I immediately picked up on a scene where a Canadian-Mohawk res sheriff questioned the actions of an American agent... the agent said something like, "Is there a border or is there not, make up your mind!", a reference to the Indians insisting on cross border privledges. Whew!...

There is an overall mood of the sheer weight of American influence in Canadian security issues.

This show is so good that it needs to be shown in America.

Hmmm... the wiki - link got messed up... try this one:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Border_%28TV_series%29

Better yet... the official site:
http://www.cbc.ca/theborder/

And... at the official site... the have a page asking for opinions on Canadian Security issues:
http://www.cbc.ca/theborder/?2

The Polling so far:

Should Canada allow U.S. rendition flights through our Airspace? Yes 28% No 72%
... or course I voted several times for "Yes"

Should Canadian border agencies control goods across First Nations land? Yes 57% No 43%
... well I voted yes, why not?

Do you feel security is too vigilant at Canada's international airports? Yes 26% No 74%
I voted no. Yea, pat down those old ladies....

CBUT is the station code for CBC HD I believe.

Thanks for the post, I don't ahve cable, so I like it when stuff like this is available online. I will check it out.

*caugh* its also on eztv bittorrent, which means it must be good. Most Canadian shows don't show up on torrent sites, besides some CBC docs.

I just watched the first 2 episodes, I like it. The CBC might have a hit on there hands. I love how they didn't "hollywood enhance" the video and even said because it was a fixed lens.

I thought the show is very well done and seems high budget with solid acting. Heh kinda like watching a show for once with acronymns like PMO, JTF, CSIS.

- I simply tend to "hang" in Canada/US Relations... so I posted there.

- My opinion is that this is more than entertainment and fiction. It examines a lot of Canadian/US issues and frictions. While Canadians know that they find Americans irritating... I don't think Americans know it. The show reflects such irritations in a thoughtful way. We Americans still think Canadians are a bunch of politically confused, happy beer drinkers and pot smokers. Americans are still surprised to find that Canadians are not as happy with anything we do.

As such, I felt that the Canada/US Relations forum was quite apropos. Curious that Canadians would view the tv progam as mere entertainment. Such are our differences.... c'est la vie.

Oh yea.... the third show... kind of suggest that the ominous Americans over-fly Canada at will... leading to bad things... the overtone that shadowy figures high up in the Canadian government are complicit.... keeping things from the people and other Canadian authorities... Kind of like we Americans don't trust our CIA / FBI / and other shadowy security forces with their black helicopters..

This is juicy stuff.

I have the episode recorded on my dvr... haven't watched yet, but the description reads as:

$1:
New, "Shifting Waters", (2008), A rescue Operation unfolds for a Canadian submarine crew trapped under polar ice while international leaders debate the sovereignty of the Arctic. (Drama).

What??? Canada has a submarine? Ok... about four very nice subs.

CBUT is the call sign for CBC Vancouver.
CHEK is Victoria

CHAN is in Burnaby, now Global
