Depreciation is a bitch.

I'm still paying for a minivan I wrote off a year ago.

Lesson number 1: When leasing or financing a vehicle of any kind, you get insurance for the replacement cost.
This is something her insurance agent should have brought up, and if it was brought up, then she's an idiot for not being smart.

Not all companies offer that type of coverage, and if they do the cost can be prohibitive.

It also depends where you live.

Insurance was easy in Manitoba with MPI (bought my first car when I lived there). In Ontario, insurance is a massive pain in the ass.

Yes it is  but it was still worth it. I learned my lesson young. I had a '71 Mach 1 that some asshole turned into a banana. I didn't have replacement cost coverage because I didn't think it was worth it. I got nowhere near what it would cost me to buy another one in as great of shape as the one I had.
After that, whenever I leased a vehicle I always got replacement cost. Same with my classic cars, but I never bothered if I paid cash for a daily use car.

If the BMW is the one I recall from the coverage, it was an M5. Burning an M5 should be considered a crime against humanity.

Take the money from those who were caught in this riot. Not entirely sure what so called "justice" they got but a little financial crisis like the one they put on the people who's property they smashed and burned to bits should serve as a little extra justice.

They should fine the rioters who have money and create a fund for things like that. usually, she should be able to fine the responsable but since it's a riot, all rioters should be held responsable.

Don't blame ICBC because she (I'm assuming) chose not to purchase the appropriate coverage (do you really think a private insurer would have acted differently?). No where in the article did she mention that she wasn't aware the coverage existed so I'm assuming she knew about it and chose not to purchase the coverage.

ICBC sucks no matter what, and they are damned expensive. If they can find a way to not have to compensate, they will find it. Don't tell me to "not blame ICBC because you assume she chose to not have the right coverage." No one can AFFORD the coverage they want.

it's not like the City of Vancouver is going to bring anyone to justice and demand that they pay restitution for the damage they caused. Unfortunately the victims get screwed over twice.

Any insurance company will try to find a way not to pay out - that's just good business. It's what healthcare insurers do in the US, with devastating consequences, and even our government health plan to some degree.

I've never heard of this replacement value insurance - it's never been mentioned to me when buying it. I thought all insurance was for depreciated cost. And why should she have to buy the lease company a new car - they should also have to accept some sort of depreciated value.

If she can afford to lease a BMW, she can afford replacement insurance if it's offered. Otherwise maybe lease a cheaper vehicle if you can't afford to insure it properly. And if she can afford to take a month off work because she's stressed, even tho she owes thousands more than ICBC paid out, well then she can't be too hard up. Must have a very understanding boss, since this stress isn't exactly up there with losing a loved one or something. This is just an entitled woman doing a bit of whining.

But I could see her suing the police. Ever since I saw the first car being lit up, I was asking what were cars doing there in the first place. The area was supposed to be closed to traffic.

Well, you're obviously in no mood to listen to reason. If I remember correctly Replacement Cost coverage with ICBC is somewhere in the $50-$100 range per year. If she can afford a new BMW the lady could have afforded that coverage quite easily.

Nope, she just wants to rag on ICBC. I've insured cars in the US, and I'll take our system any time.
