Milne has been assessed as a medium risk to re-offend due to alcohol abuse, a history of anti-social behaviour and other factors. He has refused all offers of counselling and continues to drive even though he doesn't have a licence.

What the hell? Should not go to jail? He continues to drive even with out a licence. Should be in jail a long long time.

Looks like since they've banned the spring bear hunt in Ontario its really starting to pay off. How many attacks so far this year ?

I was just about to say, Unicornlord, that a bear abusing alchol with a history of anti-social behaviour chasing women on bikes would be disconcerting in the least.

Poor lady, we all have that instinct to run. I actually was speaking with my mother the other day, and she did something similar when a grouse made a bear-like sound -- took off like a shot. She's a seasoned outdoorswoman, so it shows that there's a chance everyone can slip up when facing a bear.

EDIT: Bodah, I've heard from relatives in Ontario that a lot of bears are moving a lot farther south than usual as of late -- there was another bear sighted in London, Ontario, I think that was in the article mentioning this migration, but they didn't accredit it to rising bear populations.

Who's Mr Merois? But you're the idiot for saying people should go into the bush armed. I've done countless back country trips and never had a problem with bears - few encounters at all. I've worked in the woods and same thing, tho I guess a chainsaw is a good deterrent.

Countless Canadians do it every week - when was the last bear fatality you heard about? Actually it seems hunters are attacked and mauled as often or more so than hikers.

I guess we just have bigger balls than Americans who are afraid to leave their house without a gun.

In California it's not bears but mountain lions we worry about and since the ban on mountain lion hunting went into effect in the 1990's we've had a massive increase in such attacks...even in urban areas.

Sorry, guess I misunderstood. If there's an explosion of bears, then by all means hunt them. In BC/Alberta seems to be a case of grizzlies being over hunted.

She's lucky. In Alaska there was an Italian guy on a bike tour, and that bear chased him down and ate him. The only time I've seen a bear while bike touring was in California, crossing the highway. The Italian guy was certainly on my mind at that point, especially since the highway was deserted. But the beat just went about his business.

Same with the black bear encounters I've had in the back country - they mostly ignored us and we made sure not to approach them. I've hiked in Grizzly country but never met one. The closest we came was in late fall, while backcountry skiing. In one spot there were Grizzly tracks all over the place, going in circles. Likely he was getting ready to den. That was bit spooky and we got out of there. Seeing tracks the size of small snowshoes certainly makes an impression.
