Bad idea....
What next, you cant deep fry foods in your apartment?
Its a clear invasion of privacy and an attmept to violate civil rights buy attempting to circumscribe a clearly legal activity. Expect a court challenge

Deep frying slowly kills you?
And hell, it's the people's choice to move into these apartments. And by doing so, they follow the rules.
If they don't like the rules, they don't move in. A court challenge would be so silly.
I understand why he wants this.... Both for the apartment and the person. The smoking can yellow up walls....

There's no smoking in my apartment building... you go out on the patio or on the street.
I wouldn't rent an apartment that smelled like stale smoke from the last tenant

I'm not aware curry is a health risk too.
Smokers and their defenders like to counter any challenge to their habit with irrelevant comparisons. The traditional defense is also to attempt to divert attention with something about idling cars.
As someone whose nose is acutely aware of cigarette smoke , I'm all in favour of smoke-free buildings, though I would prefer an outright ban on this useless addictive product - indoors and out.
Smokers are just too weak to quit and are often masters of rationalization for using this product which offers no benefits to counterbalance its harmful effects.

I agree. I think the landlord is justified banning smoking on their properties.
According to the article the main motivation is to reduce maintenance costs. Having worked in the hotel industry for some time now I understand that motivation.
Smoking suites require two to three times more cleaning and maintenance than non-smoking suites. They need to be painted and the carpets cleaned more often. The heating, ventilation and cooling systems have a shorter life span and require more maintenance. Drapes, lamp shades and upholstered furniture have to be cleaned more frequently. Then of course there is the damage. Cigarette burns in the carpets, on the furniture, on the counter tops even on the TV and the remote control.
All this extra expense has a dramatic effect on the profit margin of the suite.

I think a condo in British Columbia banned it because the residents got tired of the smell. I remember hearing that quite a while ago I can't provide any details. Many flats here say no smoking or no pets and such. Unless you own the place then really nothing you can do it is their buildings their rules.

I can understand banning smoking if it is, in fact, regarding cleaning issues. Yes, it is a dirty, smelly habit - but! Lets look at things from another perspective. The whole no smoking fad has gone a little overboard. I keep hearing all the issues around smoking and second hand smoke, how we're killing everyone with it, etc. SO..you go out on your balcony to smoke - inhaling exhaust fumes from vehichles, emmissions from your natural gas furnaces, particulate from the sawmills, pulp mills, manufacturing plants, etc. Which is the worst of the two evils? Yes, they have proven that smoking, and the second hand smoke is harmful. We see it plastered all over the TV, magazine ads, newspapers, etc. What about all the others? I'd like to see an actual percentage study done. Of the poor air quality contaminents, where does cigarette smoke place? If it were found that second hand smoke really only contributed to say...2% of the lung cancer causing agents in the air, would we all jump on the "no more industrial pollution", or "no more motorized vehichles" bandwagon? I'm not trying to stir the pot here, I'm just curious.

As the owner of a rental property myself, I don't rent to smokers because it (smoking) is a fire hazard. According to the Canada Safety Council -
http://www.safety-council.org/info/home ... ecigs.html
$1: Smoking is not only bad for your health. It's also a fire hazard. Fires started by cigarettes cause one out of every five fire fatalities, and careless smoking remains a leading cause of home fire deaths in Canada. In 2000, smoker's material caused 3,929 fires with losses of $56.7 million.
Oh, and I also don't rent to smokers because it's dirty, smelly, and I'm allergic.

Hell ya, I just rented an apartment, and I think the tenant before was a smoker and it still smells. The blinds are covered in a brown dust, I hope the landlord didn't give him his damage deposit back. Stupid smokers.

Banning cigarette smokers who rent an apartment is illegal.
Years ago a lefty idiot banned an elderly lady who had a pet dog named "Puffy" a Shitzu dog. Her son was a lawyer and he ended up in the Supreme Court of Ontario and the lady won her case. It is now called the " Puffy" Law in Ontario. Now if a pet disturbs the peace or attacks an individual then that is different.
Individuals have the absolute right to do what they want in their own residence including smoking if that is what they want to do. Making their own beer or wine is also a right. Cooking, sleeping cleaning watching TV etc etc etc is also a right.
Leftys are no different than communists who infringe on the rights of an individual and do nothing but social engineering which is stupid and wrong.
If you don't like the smell of cigarette smoke then dont go there. If you dont like red cars then don't buy one. If you don't like brocolli then don't buy it. If you don't like football games then don't go to see it. If you don't like meat then don't eat it.
BUT the lefty's are so stupid and dumb that they want to ban all of these things including guns which is absolutely ridiculous.
However they do support terrorists !!!!!
