Whenever possible I try to buy local products. I also prefer to shop from an independent store than a major franchise/chain store. So shopping for me is a little mental checklist of sorts. I don't even consciously think about it, but when I go to buy something I look for the locally owned store, then when inside I compare products to find the best choice of products. Comparing where it was made and what it was made with.
It sounds like extra work to buy something, but it isn't because I just naturally do it. It doesn't take me any longer to shop and the majority of the time I don't spend more than anyone else. Some products are more expensive, but it all seems to come out in the wash.
Your only consumer voice is your dollar, so it is worth some thought when you spend it.
