The ID you needed was on the cards mailed out to everyone. I don't see why anyone didn't know what was needed.

By the way - you don't need photo ID, so long as you have 2 pieces of approved ID, such as a blood donor card, birth certificate, SIN card, credit/debit card, library card....

If you don't drive... your bus pass will do.

The trouble with the requirement is, some people just can't meet it.

I live in a rural area, and there are no such things as 'addresses'. One piece of ID must include your address, to show you live in the riding you are voting in. In some rural areas, you get a 'mailbox' and that's it. But you need an 'address' as valid ID, a 'mailbox' is unacceptable.

Luckily, I thought ahead and brought a copy of my mortgage. (Which is insane, but verified I lived in the riding.)

Every legal house in Canada has an address.

They have a legal land description, not all have house/street/municipality.

I have not seen anywhere that says you need house/street/municipality.
Just something that has your adress on it.

Do you drive? Your Driver's license has your street address on it as does your insurance, both of which are acceptable pieces of ID. YOur Hydro bill among others also has your address, in addition to your mailing address. So doe your property tax assessment. If you don't have any of the acceptable pieces of ID - and there are a lot of them - then you still have the option of being vouched for by someone in your polling division who DOES have the right identification.

My drivers license has a Box#, along with all my bills. It was not acceptable as an 'address', as it only identified who I was, not where I lived. As does almost all of my ID, from my Blood Services card to my Wildlife Identification Card.

I was at least prepared.

You needed an 'address'. A post box # wasn't sufficient (I checked ahead of time).

I think people's confusion lies in that they think everyplace has a named street. '#102 Pine Street' doesn't exist in some places. My 'address' is something like 'Range Road 271, Township Road 544, Section 27 Plot 3 Subsection 14 West of the 5th Meridian'. You need a circle of 9 just to find it on a map. ;)

I thought Range Roads ran one direction and Township Roads the other. My ex lives on one, and he still has a house number.

RRs are N<->S, TWP are E<->W. But I don't live in any 'developed' subdivision, so I just have a land description, and one of those damn Post boxes.

The issue of voter turnout is structural and is not endemic only to Canada. Voting participation has been trending down for decades in the established democracies.

I'm not entirely sure why but I think part of it has to do with the fact that people have more choices to do stuff. Politics is about engagement, which takes time. If you have more to occupy your time, the less likely you are to engage in politics.

Doesn't your drivers license have your street adress on it? When I lived in a rural area I had a P.O. box but I still had to have my street address on my drivers license.

You have an address as well as your PO Box.

Want to bet $1000.00 I dont? I have a post box number and an area code.

It's right in front of me and there is no address so sorry but your wrong.

I'll take that bet. You most certainly DO have an address in addition to your PO box. If it's not on your DL, then Alberta is behind the times.

My first driver's license had my street address on it, even though we had our mail delivered to our PO box. Then again, that was almost 30 years ago... in B.C.

Want me to scan and post it? Then you can send the thousand through interac.

Well Lily don't forget, Alberta still uses flimsy paper medical cards. I think most of Canada has switched to plastic medical cards with a magnetic strip on the back.
