As far as I am concerned you are wrong. The death penalty is a crock of s..., by todays laws the best thing we could do is throw her in a cell for the next 60 years.
Wow, I just started reading through the comments on the story, and there are a lot of people who think its best to just kill. Don't get me wrong, what this woman did was sick, disgusting, revolting, just to name a few emations. BUT, if I was given the choice, the death penalty or life in prison, I would pick the death penalty. It's a release, these people are all wanting this woman released from her pain, and the misery and torture she would go through being locked up for 50-60 years. Trust me, there's more punishment in being locked up for eternity then there is in a quick get out of jail dead card.
While I understand the point you're making, The reality is that very few people like her actually get to spend the rest of their lives in jail and get out early on "Good Behavior" or some other crock like half their sentence served.
I don't see the death penalty as being a revenge factor against sick & twisted individuals.... I see it as removing a threat & burden from society.
When someone does something horrible to other people and they have the chance of doing it again, rather then giving them chances of getting out and doing it again, get rid of them. Then they can no longer pose a threat to anything or anyone & there's one less murderous lunatic in the world.
I only support the death penalty on people who are, without question, guilty. People who have committed a horrible murder on one or more people, who show no remorse and have no intentions on "Bettering" themselves are not worth the time or tax payers money..... and we shouldn't burden ourselves over things like executing them in a "Humane" manner. Their victims were usually never killed in a humane manner, so again, why bother?
And why does it have to be something expensive as lethal injection or the gas chamber?
Two rounds in the back of the head and dump them somewhere..... two bullets are not only quicker and cheaper, but just as effective.
Society doesn't need to pamper people who have no respect for society or those within it and we shouldn't have to hand-hold them to betterment if there is no chance of them getting better. Remove them from existence and you remove the threat.
There are also many of these kinds of people who kill simply just so they can go to jail, have three square meals a day and a roof over their head.... and assuming they'll really suffer by rotting in jail for 20-50 years isn't much of an assurance.
Charles Manson sure doesn't seem to be suffering much, in fact, he seems to be enjoying it and able to write letters and continue to get his voice heard around the world... not to mention seems to be living in slightly better conditions then your average criminal in prison.
Sorry, but to me, that's not justice.
Prison is supposed to rehabilitate or correct people who show that they could possibly re-enter & contribute to society some day.
I think many people who call for someone's death for committing such crimes are merely frustrated at how our legal system protects these kinds of people more then they protect society from them. Some are out for revenge, others don't want their tax money to house them while they have to work everyday and contribute to society.... and others just want the system to work as it should.
Remove threats from our society & rehabilitate those who can be..... not for our prisons & our tax money to be turned into some early retirement home.
And yes, prison life isn't the same as a retirement home, hardly..... but when it comes to the basics of where you don't have to work, but have a bed and hot meals every day, it's an accurate comparison.
There are many cases around the world where people commit crimes just to go back to prison because they actually prefer it.
