If he's a 20 year model employee why fire him for fucking up once?
If he was hired last month and he's already had a warning or two then maybe letting him go is a good thing.
The union should make sure just because he's not the bosses favorite employee, if his record indicates he has been a solid employee, that there is no personal bias.
People fuck up, present company excluded of course. No sense firing someone you don't need to fire just so you can spend thousands of dollars training someone to take his place.
