So? Harper employed domestic staff as well - what's the difference?

Oh my god! Being prime minister of Canada is a job with some perks. The horror. Word has it that he gets free rides around too. Where will the taxpayer abuse end?

Actually all signs so far indicate that the taxpayer abuse is just getting started, like with $700 million slated for one shipyard that in five years might be capable of producing one ship. This thing with the nannies though isn't worth the time it takes to talk about it.

BeaverFever BeaverFever: So? Harper employed domestic staff as well - what's the difference? This: $1: The disclosure comes after an election campaign where Trudeau repeatedly attacked the Conservatives' enhanced universal child care benefit, or UCCB, and income splitting for families, arguing rich families like his and former prime minister Stephen Harper's didn't need taxpayers' help.
"In these times, Mr. Harper's top priority is to give wealthy families like his and mine $2,000," Trudeau said in reference to the Conservatives' income-splitting tax credit. "Let me tell you something: We don't need it. And Canada can't afford it."

It started July 1, 1867 and has continued right to this day, with absolutely no variation based on the party in power.

Give it enough time on the big spending issues. Within two years the Liberals will be so deeply entrenched back into their old Shawinigan two-step habits that it'll make the Harper years look like a golden era of responsible spending in comparison. But Harper was the devil because he wasn't cuddly or selfie-tastic and all that other important feels sort of stuff! Yup, welcome to life under the rule of Generation Pussy.

Jean Chrétien chose not to use one of the Airbus aircraft purchase by Mulroney to fly around. Instead, he used one of the Challenger business jets purchased for government ministers. A lot smaller, a lot cheaper. Airbus are designated CC-150 Polaris, 2 configured for mid-air refuelling tankers, 3 can be configured with economy class seats to transport troops, or beds for medevac, or empty for cargo. They have the same large side door for cargo as a Fed-Ex aircraft. One of those 3 has been configured with leather seats, etc, for the PM. Chrétien chose to leave that aircraft for the troops, but Harper wanted the big one. He wanted something that looks a Canadian version of Air Force One. Will Trudeau chose to be frugal like Chrétien?

They were grade schoolers when he came to power, as I recall. I think Trudeau should stand by his words and hire his own nannies.

"Let me tell you something: We don't need it. And Canada can't afford it." Rich families like his don't need a personal chef or housekeeper either, yet every PM gets one. That said, I'm not necessarily opposed to him having to pay out of pocket but its unfair to say chefs and maids and gardeners are ok, but not nannies.
