I do mind working Christmas since I have family. But I have heard from my boss that in 4 years or less, we will be open every day of the year and that definitely includes Christmas day.

Working at Christmas is bullshit (unless you're an essential service worker, of course - unfortunately, they really have no choice).

Everything has become about making a buck and family values have become non-existent to employers. It all contributes to the further breakdown of our families and our society.

I think retailers, especially, should be forced to honour stat holidays and give their staff that time off with their families or be forced to pay a set fee for every hour they're in operation that day (eg: If retailers want to be open on stats, they should have to pay $5000/hour that they're open). If it became less lucrative, or they were actually losing money, they'd cut out this bullshit.

Christmas is just a regular day here now. It used to be a stat(Costitution Day), but when they went to a five day work week, lots of older holidays were dropped.

Agreed. Which is why I am not one of the "Boxing Day Sale" shoppers. I refuse to contribute to it.

To each their own I guess, its a pain in the ass here when everything is closed. Most businesses close at 6pm or 8pm every day here and store hours on Sundays at from 12 to 5. Still people wonder why they can never make enough money and stay on unemployment.

I found what this commenter on the linked article to be thought provoking.

Hospital workers, radio and television workers, telephone workers, police and armed forces,security guards, hotels and motels plus restaurants, cleaners and service workers throughout a variety of industries, gas stations, taxi drivers...all of these and many more work on Christmas day including pastors,workers at places like the Salvation Army, corner grocers... all these have been working many years.

Let's face facts, there are essential jobs that require someone to be working on Christmas Day. Imagine if a loved one had a stroke and needed an ambulance but the only response you got was "sorry but no one will be coming because it's Christmas." Heck, that article mentions how this one pizzeria owner actually LOVES working on Christmas Day. It all depends on a case by case basis, some people don't even have any family to go to anyway.

If I go out on Boxing Day, it's only for work because it pays time and a half. I have enough junk laying around the house.

Same here, if they are open on Sundays at all. Mostly, those are the larger stores/businesses, not the one man's businesses, which are a LOT here in the area. Which also means no work...
