$1:
NDP members also say they will also support the legislation, but indicate they want exceptions made for those being housed in the worst jails.

Why? So people who vote ndp will be out sooner? Jails aren't supposed to be nice places. It's to dissuade you from coming back.

Hmmm. I guess I always thought the credit was becuase time spent pre-trial was while you were presumed innocent and was supposed to be a motivation for the crown to get things done quickly. I'd say increase the sentences and put more efforts in to getting trials going quickly to make abuse harder and have less impact. But apparently I'm on the outs....

While it motivates the crown to move faster, it motivates the lawyers to stall at every possible occasion.

This has to be followed by putting a big push into making courts run better, faster and more jails to house these people.
The Tories have always run on a anti-crime agenda and this is their opportunity to prove that.

The whole two-for-one credit thing has always bothered me. I hope they get rid of it. I really don't think it should have ever been allowed in the first place. Criminals shouldn't get off so easy. Where's the justice in that?!

I'd lock up the defense lawyers for the time the criminals get off.

You know what is going to happen, you'll get a flood of criminals released because of the shitty jail conditions. The Crown has the duty to proceed and a criminal must face justice in a reasonable amount of time.

And then you'll all be screaming about the criminals that got away.

But face it, if you or I are wrongly accused of a crime and end up in remand we would expect that there are sanitary conditions with heat and light where we can be held safely without fearing for our own personal safety.

Unfortunately those conditions rarely exist in Canada's remand centres.

This change is the cure for the side effect. This does not cure the disease.

And frankly I am sick of seeing criminals get 2 and 3 for 1 as well.

Cure the disease.

Conservatives are just such "goodie two shoes" they should automatically do double time for their discretions. [B-o]

They mentioned on the radio that this 2 for 1 deal was never a law, it was just something the judges just came up with on their own. Isn't that just so progressive of them..

I don't know about elected but they definately should be held accountable.

Geez, Donny, I tried to Pos Rep you, and thank you for the Neg Rep you dropped on me today(too bloody funny lol) from an ancient thread, but it would not let me. It is unfortunate, you are slumping to the level of Streaker with this "necro repping" I expected so much more, sad, really.

Just the fact that you went out of your way, and took the time to look this old thread up to neg rep me is extremely flattering. Ahhh, you shouldn't have

Ya, I wasted five seconds of my life doing that. You are right, you should be flattered.

This is really a tough call. As it was stated earlier by Hurley, the point is that the person arrested is presumed innocent and the idea is to get the court process over quicker. If the person is found innocent, pay them for the time they were held, but if they’re found guilty, tough. The time spent in remand is not considered part of any sentence.

EXACTLY. When criminals are getting 2:1 credit before a plea or a trial they do EVERYTHING they can to drag out the proceedings to ensure they maximize this "bonus". It's disgusting and causes more delay than you can imagine. If they have no incentive to drag out the proceedings I foresee many earlier pleas and less dicking around in general.

Sure, the justice system needs more resources in general to make trials happen faster (what part of government doesn't need more money?), but this is a long overdue change.
